Running new wires inside completed build

Postby DoctahDeane » Sun May 17, 2020 9:42 am

Hi everyone - I found two great little reading lights that I plan to install. Although I have an overhead light, these are smaller and if one of us conks out early, the other could still read without disturbing. The inside of the trailer is all finished. Just talking two 14GA wires in each corner, alongside the pillows. I can use loom and stick that somehow to the corners. Just wondering if anyone has done something like this that looks better and keeps the wires out off the way/protected? Hope y'all hanging in there. Camping soon....

Depending on how you want it to look and if you want to create something out of wood... I can see cutting some thin strips from a complementary wood. Width of 3/4" might work for two conductor 14awg. Bevel the edges at 45 degrees. If thin enough it will flex and follow a curve up the corner of the wall. Soak in hot water if you need a little more flexibility.

14awg seem pretty heavy for a reading light. 12 volt? What is the amperage draw? Are they LED? My reading lights, 12v LEDs, use 20awg.

You're right, Tim. The wires are too big , I guess. I mean they work but I could go with something smaller like 16 or 20. I'll look into that and thanks for the suggestion on wood as well. I'll consider that, too.

I wasn't real clear with the thin strips idea. If you cut something 1/8" or less thickness it should be flexible. Might have sounded like I was saying 3/4" was thin. I suspect you understood. Just in case I confused someone else. Not sure if it would work, but, beveling a piece before you rip the thin strips might create several widths that give you a choice of final widths. There's youtube vids on simple jigs to cut consistent thin strips that you could use.

When I saw your beautiful woodie TD picture I thought, he's gonna want wood trim! Good job...

Thanks and I think I I can pry back some of the existing molding and run the wires behind, especially if I drop back to a thinner wire, which I've already ordered.
