ive a little more cash, how long should i make my tounge?

im building a 5X9 frame,

demensions/thickness of the tounge-tube would be nice also,

single tounge, with braces,

not an a-frame tounge,

id search but i get all confused and dizzy, frustrated and P.O.ed,
sorry for my questions,

Hi John,

I may not be answering your question exactly, but the common wisdom is that you want your tongue long enough that the trailer won't hit your car during a sharp turn or while backing up. That said, approximately the distance between the tow ball and the outer corner of your bumper (plus maybe a little).

Does that make sense? Is that what you are asking?

ON my chassis I made tongue length a few inches longer than the distance of center of ball hitch to further most point of bumper on tow vehicle. That way I can full jack-knife my trailer/tow vehicle in a parking place and create a sheltered space using one side of trailer and one side to tow vehicular and it gives me a lot of maneuvering (turning) room. And will not put bumper into front wall of trailer.... My frame is 54x108 inches, tongue is single length of 3x3x.120 steel tubing that goes back to catch second cross member and is fully gusseted...

now how far under the trailer should i go

my jeeps 5.5 wide, and id give another.5 or 1ft,
so a 4ft tounge, from front of frame to jeep,
+ (4.5 feet?) for under the trailer??

for a total of 8.5???
that sound right??

O.K. so now im seriusly confused, and my heads spinning,
the aussies are too strict, and everybodys got an opinion,

i did learn im doing a "composite" tounge, so i got somewhere,

i just wish someone would give me some safe thicknesses, and lengths to
buy and weld up,

i was going to go with 2X2x1/8 on my angle composit pieces and 2X3X1/8
on the tounge,
so that being said,
can i go out to 4 foot and be safe,

and how far back into the frame should i go??

That'll work fine for your steel. Makes a good sturdy tongue.

I like my first X-member at about 20-24" and attach to that, but can vary that number depending on the trailer design.

...What Rich said...use 2x18 tube for the tongue and run it back to the first cross member back from the front of the frame and run the side angles back to the side of the frame to make a triangular corner...makes a very solid tongue for anything but the very heaviest of offroad use

Scope, Here's how I did mine. 2" X 2" X 1/8" frame. 2" X 3" X 3/16" tongue with 2" X 2" X 1/8" angle for the bracing on the tongue. Overkill? Maybe, but I know it's strong enough.
