Got a new coupler but ...

Postby Ron Dickey » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:21 pm

I went and baught a coupler for my trailer frame ... much to my dismay the coupler is 2 3/4 inches and the square pole is 3 inch. the coupler is for 3500 lbs. made by master lock.

How can I get it to fit. buy a torch and use a sledge. Attach a smaller rod and have it welded on top of the larger one.

Take it back  and try again. are there 3 " ones or is the next size 4 and then what.

the trailer I am using is an old boat trailer and the old coupler had rusted out.

Perplexed.

I'd take it back and get the correct one. The coupler isn't a good place to "Jerry Rig" as all the weight of the trailer is concentrated on that one spot. It always pays to do it right, especially there.

You want to buy a 2" coupler for a 3" channel. Even wal-mart normally has them.

Ron...I don't know what you mean that the coupler rusted out...but I'd check to make sure you don't have a lot of rust/cancer on the inside of the tube that you are wanting to mate the new coupler to...make sure you have enough good material to attach to....just a thought...Doug

Thanks guys, I did return that one and found one the right size same day.

I am full of set backs but that is also learning new things and technics.
