Wick Lanterns

Postby len19070 » Sun Dec 07, 2008 6:25 am

Besides all my Coleman stuff.

I've got a big collection of old to new Wick Lanterns. I don't know why, but then who really knows why people stare collecting things.

I guess it goes back to my Boy Scout Days. Each Patrol (5-7) had a Dietz Junior Kerosene Lantern. Since then I've always associated camping with a Kerosene Lantern.

Models like Blizzard, Crescent, Junior, Air Pilot, Monarch and Wizard.

I still use a Dietz Crescent Lantern when I go camping. The Galley of the Tear has a 12volt light and I have a flashlight if I really have to see something.

Theres a lot more engineering in a lantern than you think.

But I think theres nothing like the soft glow of a Kerosene Lantern.

As a kid in the 50's and 60's, our family always had a couple old kerosene lanterns (some wick, some mantle) on hand for when the lights would go out (sometimes for a couple days in mid-winter. Also had an old pot-bellied stove which was carried into the kitchen. I always get a kick out of TV Westerns and movies when you see a cowboy blow out a wick lantern. Boy, that would have got your butt blistered. Funny how you can remember those details but conveniently forget that you were freezing your tushy off at the same time.

Best,

John
I've seen a fair amount of those. Some with 2 and 3 wicks.

Only at Flea Markets though???

And always a bit more than I've wanted to pay.

Hi guys,

:shake hands:
Nice oil. burners. I'm interested to know the price of Kerosene over there. I checked the price hear today and it was double that of 97 octane unleaded gas. :? $> When I was a kid it was about a third of the price of 5 star gas (all gas had lead in those days ).

Thanks for an answer in advance, Mark.

Haven't bought any recently. The price closely tracks that of diesel, but is very dependant on location. Highly refined kerosene (K-1) is running right around $3/gallon here. This type is clean enough to burn indoors (for those so inclined.) This price does not include highway taxes (about 47 cents/gal) whereas the diesel does.

I don't know either. I've always found that the worst thing to burn in a Kerosene Lantern is Kerosene!

I use Charcoal Lighter Fluid. It burns Brighter, Cleaner and comes in its own container....And it ain't cheap!

Although now is the time to buy it at some of he Big "Box" stores. For them its a seasonal item.

The price of Kerosene varies as much as gas. About $3.50 ish right now. Much cheaper in summer so buy early. 8)

Yep, I just paid 3.49 per gal. I heat my workshop with Kerosene heaters -- That is, When I just "have " to have the heated space.

I've only got a couple oil lamps but lovem. We started being a lot more energy conscious when our electric bill took a 20% hike because the increased fuel costs. It hasn't gone back down now that the price of fuel has. We shut lights off and use oil lamps a lot more now just because its not neccesary to have bright lights all the time.

I've never seen a oil stove like that. I want one. :)
