What items do you find "useful" when camping ?

Postby bobhenry » Wed Dec 10, 2008 8:47 am

Have we listed the camping goodies that seem to go hand in hand with Teardrop camping. As a fairley recent convert to teardropping I was quite suprised to find the goodies have cost me almost as much as my build. I almost put this in the Neubie section and then thought about the camping section but to get a comprehensive list it was best presented as a poll.
Some of the must have items I have found to be.......

1. a pop up canopy for rain or shade
2. cook top and fuel
3. good coolers
4. camp chairs
5. pots, pans, dishes and silverware
6. portable lighting ~~ lanterns, flashlites,
7. the bedding ~ mattress ,sheets ,blankets ,pillows.
8. electronics ~ radio ~ tv ~ dvd ~ tape player
9. small heater
10. Water jug or jugs
11. fire extinguisher ~~thanks Al ~~
12. Small tool box with hardware xtra bulbs , tape and wiring.
13. Extra batteries
14. Camera

15. Extension cord ~~thanks Danny~~~
15. Hatchet ~~Thanks Jeremy~~
16. Emergency tarp and cordage

17. clamps ~~Thanks Becca~~
18. 1st aid kit
19. bug repellant
20. shovel

21. Matches Duh! Forgot that once ~~thanks auntie M~~
22. dutch oven and charcoal kinda pots and pans but we'll repeat it
23. Extra hub or bearings and lugs and / or lug nuts ( little grease wouldn't hurt )

"God I could have used this one last October "

NOTE :paper goods and beer and food are not a 1 time investment item! But they are a good thing to have when camping :D

These are only a few we consider must have's and they can add up quickly.
Many of ours were borrowed from the house such as bedding some were purchased from thrift stores and My favorite Goodwill. My Goodwill store supplied my propane cooktop , campchairs and some electronics. Yard sales have provided us with many items like my 3 scissorjacks I use as stabilizers ( 1.50 each) Our red neck water heater ( 32 cup coffee maker ) $ 5.00 A coleman white gas cooktop $10.00 in pristene condition.
How many items can we add to the list above as items we find useful in our tiny little trailers.

Bob,

There's no end to what in the way of camping gear that you could keep adding, but as to must haves.....
think along the line of what could go wrong in the middle of a camping trip, how about a roll of Duck-tape, a small roll of bailling wire, roll of electrical tape, extra fuses, light bulbs both for the cabin lighting and trailer chasis, spares for running, brake, side marker lights.
And maybe a fire extinguisher. Oh how about extra sheet metal screws couple of nuts and bolts etc. again this list could get long but toss all in a small Tuppeware container and mayber forget about, but know it's there when needed, oh remember spare batteries for all the flashlights and the camera.

Anything else??

Oh there have been a couple of very good lists and threads that have discussed this in the past, but maybe something new will pop-up.

We keep everything needed in the teardrop or underneath it with the exception of the extension cord that's maintaining the batteries. There's a few items we find we never use and I weed them out. Whenever I get the teardrop ready for a trip I look for trip specific items and try to leave the rest on the garage floor under the teardrop. As I pull the TD out of the garage I take a second look at the gear on the floor to make sure that anything needed, is not forgotten.:D Danny

Bob, hope you don't mind if I borrowed your list and added to it:

1. a pop up canopy
2. cook top and fuel (stays in galley)
3. 1 cooler for ice and beverages
4. 1 electric cooler for food. Stands upright like a fridge. Great.
5. camp chairs
6. pots, pans, dishes and silverware - (stays in galley)
6. portable lighting: lanterns, good flashlites, battery operated candles
7. the bedding: mattress ,sheets ,blankets ,pillows. (stays in camper)
8. electronics: tv , dvd player (flatscreen on the wall stays in camper)
9. small ceramic heater (stays in camper)
10. Coleman Hot Water on Demand, water hose
11. fire extinguisher (stays in camper cabin)
12. Small tool bag well equipped.
13. Extra batteries
14. Camera (always have my camera with me)
15. Extension cord(s)
15. Hatchet and a good knife (small one in tool bag)
16. Emergency tarp and lots of different sized bungee cords
17. Personal safety protection.
18. A good fold-up knife for your pocket - comes in handy.
19. Different sized spring clamps - small ones are great for hanging your lights or clothes.
20. Nylon rope
21. Compass, whistle, glo-sticks
22. Mosquitoe repellent
23. Baby/sanitary wipes
24. First Aid Kit
25. Small shovel
25. Garbage bags, zip lock storage bags, towels, paper goods.
and I am sure I have left things out. I keep the majority of these things in the galley storage and inside the camper. I store the camp chairs, coolers and tables in my garage and load when needed.

Thanks for starting this post...I like seeing what others bring in case I have missed something important.

Since mine will double as a "PMS Shelter", I'll keep it stocked to use at a moments notice.
Not so much as for camping, but to the list I would add a Playstation or such. I'll need a little entertainment while hideing from the wife and daughter. 8)
