Ice Racing

Does anyone else race on the ice? [or ride]

We have a race coming up in about 2 1/2 weeks. This one is inside on a hockey rink. I have never done it that way. Most often we do in on a friends farm pond that he clears for us. [he races also].

I guess I can share more about it.

We generally use mountain bikes. Old school no suspended bikes [front or rear]

We make our own studded tires. We use a rounder tire profile vs a more square one.

We use pan head sheet metal screws. installed from the inside of the tire out ward. We used silicone caulking compound to cover the screw heads. The length of the screw depends of the thickness of the tire. We spend a lot of time finding the right set up. If the screws are too long... there is too much drag.. and the screws wobble. To short and of course you don't get good grip.
We ended up with a set up that grips better than slicks on clean dry pavement. On Bill's small pond. 20 laps to a mile.. so the turns are pretty tight.. we hard coasting through as 20mph. You end up sprinting each straight away and coasting the corners. Riding hard I would end up with a controlled two wheel drift from the inside of the turn out to the outer edge as I came back to the straight away.. :D

no... our back ends aren't supposed to come around that much...

we also have a lot less horsepower A speed skater would eat us alive..

this next race a bunch of hockey players want to come and what.. I am not sure they will be that impressed..

Well we had our first ride on the indoor hockey rink.. boy was it sweet.

The ice is smooth and hard. The rink also made for a bigger track than the one we had outside. It was a blast.. :D

We had our races yesterday.

We were hoping for more people from out of town. It is amazing how many are afraid to do it. Also many underestimate what you need for studs. Or how could you can get your bike to stick.

We had 13 people race.. and we are going faster than what , the local hockey players can do. It was a blast to watch, and to do.

Perhaps we will get to do this more of this next winter
