older colman Stove ***ON FIRE!!

Postby Ron Dickey » Sat Jul 18, 2009 11:41 am

Went camping for my birthday on Tue. and we cooked just fine on the stove. Then whush it was on fire. Shut off the burner and finally the flames went out.

I guess the fire was not hot enough and the fuel began to drip out on the the stove singing it abit with Fire :cigar:

It began to drip, I just took the burner apart today and cleaned it out and the rod inside the rod that the fuel runs through over the burner.

What should I do what heppened??

If you know what I mean

Ron, is this a stove that you regularly use? If not, maybe a thorough cleaning would be in order, valve/tank etc... I've had them flame up at the tip of the generator and drip a bit, had to tighten up the tip. When you took the generator apart, was it crudded up with carbon not just black, but chunks of stuff? Sorry, but it's really hard to say what the problem is without being there and seeing it in action. I took a shot though. Kinda sounds like you need a new generator. Doug

there was gunk when I first got it shined up the center inside rod and it worked fine for several uses. I have never been able to get the 2nd burner to work.

A new generator is a quick fix, but an old one can be made to work. Steel wool the center rod, the spring can be cleaned with solvent & steel wool. Remove the tip from the generator tube and soak it in solvent also. Blow out the tube with air.
For the burners, disassemble, clean with steel wool, reassemble (be sure to keep the parts in order). With an air compessor, blow out the 'U' shaped fixture behind the main burner, that should clear the tube for the auxilliary burner also.
This has always worked for me.
P.S. make sure that all connections are screwed down tight. A bit of teflon tape on the screw threads helps too.

Ron, here is a good set of instructions to follow in rebuilding the stove.
