Could I do it by myself?~Photos Added~1970 Metz Canned Ham

Postby SIXTOTWO » Sun Nov 22, 2009 6:05 pm

Hey Ladies(and Gents),

Someone we know is giving away their half taken apart Metz Canned Ham. Someone gave it to him and he doesn't have the time right now to finish it.

I would LOVE to take this on myself. Myself, only because my husband will probably kill me if I even tell him that I want it. We've just about finished our Woody Tear and he always has a project going on. Mostly projects that I want done or house duties. Don't get me wrong...I'm always right there with him helping out but he's mostly doing the figuring out part.

How many of you have done a restoration all on your own??? Do you think I could do it? I have some wooodworking skills and am not afraid of the tools, with exception to the router...that thing scares me to death!!!! :?

I will try to get some pictures this week! :pictures:
Oh my....he's gonna kill me!!!

If I don't repost...my husband has offed me, call the police NOW!!

Later(hopefully) :R

Holy cow - from what I'm seeing in in your album with your teardrop I'd say go for it - you're more than qualified.

... and don't worry about your husband - he won't leave you hangin'.

 ah, perhaps a poor choice of words there.

+1
You can work at it a bit at a time and if you run into a snag just ask. We have a lot of very experienced restorers too.

It's untitled as the person who he got it from gave it away because it was just rotting away in his field. EDITED: It was actually abandoned in his field therefore no title.

I would LOVE to take this on myself.

Sue: You are definitely qualified!

However, just to protect yourself, I would see if it has a Vehicle ID# (VIN) on it and then check with your state's Dept. of Motor Vehicles to see what they have on it. Also, check with them to see what the laws are regarding abandoned property like this. I would hate to see you do all that work and then not be able to get it registered or have the original owner come back to claim it or.... There is a recent thread, here on the forum, where a VW camper was completely restored only to find out it was stolen years ago. The restorer is out the bucks and the insurance company that has rightful claim is probably gloating.

Update:  HaHaHa! I just looked and you two were the ones that posted the recovered VW story. Well I guess you'll check before you bite that line! HaHaHa!

 Go for it!!

You have nothing to lose since it's free.

I would second Sharon's advice about registering it before putting any work or money into it just to be sure everything goes smoothly.

LOL! Thanks for the laugh!! Yeah, I have been looking into this a little and our friend is gonna get some kind of letter from the previous owner stating that he gave it to him and that it was abandoned on his property many years ago. I will be going to get pics and the vin # soes I can check it all out. Thanks for all the advice and I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Thanks for your compliments Scott! :)

Miriam, If it all goes thru I WILL be asking for all your help.

PS: Hubby said I can check out what's involved with getting it titled!!! YAY!!!
One obsticle down!! And you won't have to call the police...I'm still here.

Found out it's a 1971.

Anyone have pictures of one? I've been looking all over the internet to find a picture of a restored 1971 Metz and can't find one anywhere.

 Road trippppppppppp! Ha Ha Ha I am betting she meant all "you all's help." See if you are a Yankee you don't have all those helpful Southernisms......... 8) (we make it up as we go)

I am betting there are a bunch of folks out there who can help. Most of the building is in technique and then applied to the design. Took me a while to get that
