Am I stark raving mad?

Postby Siouxgirl2 » Fri Feb 05, 2010 1:09 am

Hi Ladies,

So... I started my build on the tear with the Rondack's plans. I have the workbench and profile completed and have been getting parts (i.e. windows etc.) to start framing and what happens...?

I acquired a partially built 5x9 that a nice guy couldn't finish due to life circumstances and have now taken this on as well and wants me to finish the build and send him pictures. He steel framed it which is a little different. Anyway, my new plan is to try to finish this build and have it sealed and campable this summer and use it with my daughter while building the other... since the other tear will not be done this year and will take me quite awhile.

Now I'm trying to keep materials straight between the two and they are two completely different build styles. I guess I kinda jumped into this with both feet because now I have two projects. I hope I can keep up with them. Being new to this... it is kind of crazy keeping them both straight in my mind.

I think I am stark raving mad.

Well you won't be bored waiting for the glue to dry on one...

Keeping up to date materials wise will be a project... you know, you just bought screws/bolts/brads for one only to discover you should have doubled the buy...

I hear a lot of 'oh, dammit's in your future...

Loyal,

Look forward and stay positive.

You're smart to simply use what you've already gotten on this new one. While you are finishing it, you may find new, improved, or "Oh, I wish I would've seen that" ones for the next. If you're going to make mistakes (everybody does) and have any "woulda-coulda-shoulda" thoughts, this is the one to do it on. Also, you may finish this one and find out that you are happy enough with it and not build the other.

The weight of this trailer is important. I think I'd get the trailer weighed before you continue. That way, you'll have a better idea of how heavy you can build and what actions to take from here. (I'm not certain what you mean when you say this one is framed in steel but I'm thinking you mean sides and top as well?) I wouldn't go on somebody's "ball park" guess. You'll probably be doing enough of your own guessing and calculating as you build.

Best wishes on your project and please remember to post :pictures: starting with this new trailer project as it sits now. If you post a picture of it now, if any of our members see any problems with it, they'll post their concerns to try to help you.

Very cool Loyal that you have two teardrops to work on. It will keep you out of trouble. Anyway that's what I tell my husband when I want to start a new project.

I haven't figured out how to post pictures yet on this site.
Maybe one of you knows... and can help a forum newbie out. :QM

That would be correct. His father had a metal fabricator bend the tear shaped edges and the cross supports were welded (just as the trailer chassis) to that so it will be heavier then a wood framed tear. I have access to a picture of the frame if I can figure out how to post. Here we go... did it work?

Okay that didn't work. Hmmmm?
