glass beads as washers... I may be in for trouble

Postby Siouxgirl2 » Sun Apr 18, 2010 11:49 pm

Well since I was sick anyway, I drilled and screwed my headliner in. I don't like drilling metal (those metal shavings hurt).

My girly side may hurt me in the long run. I'm using beautiful decorative green pearly glass beads as washers behind my screws and they may not hold up to road vibration (they look awesome) so I may have to redo in the future with hand painted metal washers. We'll see. Since I had to demo and start over I thought I'd give an update about where I am in the process of my little tear.

all you need is some metal tube cut to be a little longer than the bead placed in the hole of the bead. that way the screw applies the pressure on the tube and not the bead. but I don't think you'll have any problem the way you have them now.. if they didn't break tightening up the screw, road vibration probably won't do it either. great idea BTW.. :D

:pictures: :pictures: :pictures: Sounds really lovely. I am with the metal tube idea. They are more likely to come out than break the beads.

If you google screw cups and caps you will find different suggestions.

Yeah, the metal tube idea is a great one... wish I'd thought of it but the beads didn't break. I did, however, use a few metal ones as temporary for areas I needed the strength with the idea as the wood molds better I would switch them to the beaded ones as well. I am hoping they last as I sealed each screw hole.

I may try to post a few pictures tonight if I get a chance of the headliner (I haven't put the sidewalls in yet because the frame isn't square so I have to do a few more adjustments before putting the sidewalls in.

Today I made a little decorative detail that I will add later on to make her have a little personal touch (more on that little thing later). :R

I have a hard time getting time on the computer to download pictures and the build is slow going with a little one (and I'm sick right now too).

I hopefully will get a few up soon. Thanks all!
