Scot's Track Shack - finishing touches - updated 4/26/12

Postby Facemeltingly Epic » Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:48 am

So a couple Saturdays ago, I finally picked up a 4x8 frame from Harbor Freight in Newark. I don't have the frame totally finished (still working on the lights), but it'll be roadworthy in time for my appointment with the DMV on the 24th to get it titled.

I settled on a Rimple profile (spent a lot of time dithering between whether I wanted to do this, a Weekender or a Benroy), and hope to have the trailer camp-worthy by the fourth weekend of March. This is when road racing season begins in earnest for me. I'll actually be making my first visit to the track the second weekend of March, but that weekend I will be taking driver's school (for an SCCA competition license) and since Mrs. Epic is coming with me we'll be staying in a hotel.

So far, it's been a couple hours every night when I can get them in, plus all the hours I can stand on my free Saturdays and Sundays. Here are a few pictures:

Even though I hadn't installed and wired the lights yet, I still hitched it up and took the trailer around the block. Yes, that IS my tow vehicle. :)

You know there are way too many threads on a board when someone posts a new build thread and it takes 3 days to get the first reply. You have set a pretty tight time line for camp-able, you must have an update already

Good luck with the build. Nice Mazda btw, looks fun.

There isn't much to report at this time. I installed a tongue jack on the trailer yesterday afternoon after I got home from work, and I picked up some lumber from the big-box store (the blue one, not the orange one).

I had a bunch of other things to do today, so I wasn't able to do any work on the trailer. But tomorrow I begin making sawdust! Won't be attaching anything permanently just yet, as I haven't got the trailer titled yet; that happens this coming Thursday.

Okay, I began making sawdust in earnest today!
Image
This is the result of ripping 2x6 boards into 1x2's. Here are a few of the boards that resulted from this operation. IMO, they're not the better ones in the batch; I got much better pieces from the second 2x6 (probably as a result of experience, I dunno...).
Image

I did take a fairly long break to watch the last 40 laps of the Daytona 500, but I have the floor of my trailer assembled.
Image

I'm going to let the glue dry overnight, then tomorrow after work I'll drill holes so I can bolt it to the frame and coat the underside with the dreaded black goo.

I got mounting holes drilled...
Image

Also, my CPES and epoxy filler arrived.
Image

Finally, the bottom of the floor is wearing a fresh coat of sticky, smelly black goop. I really wish I'd seen the thing on the label about keeping the unopened can in a heated room for 24 hours before use prior to starting this job...
Image

Hopefully the tar will be dry enough that I can bolt the floor to the trailer tomorrow and coat the top of it with CPES. I just have a hunch that job will be much easier before the walls go on... otherwise, tomorrow's project will be cutting the sides!

I also ordered a roof vent off eBay and placed a rather large order with Li'l Bear this afternoon. Hope it gets here soon!

Pat.... is that you??

As I mentioned at the top of the thread, I'm trying to have it camp-worthy in time for the Double National.

Cool. See you at the school!

In the meantime, check out other parts of the forum. There is LOTS of good info here.
