Can't justify the expense of chains AND studs, so I ...

Postby Noob » Fri Feb 25, 2011 8:21 am

... made my own " monster " studded tires.
I used 120, 1/2" self-tapping sheet metal sqrews. on the front tire and 160 on the rear. It doesnt look good, but works awesome.

Needed something for this supposed 6" blizzard ( in Ohio ) . :D

I lined them with and old road tire with the beads cut off.

Totaly worthless on paved, feels like, riding on 2 flat tires ...

and these are actually long compared to what others are using.

First and foremost, I am not trying to start a fight. I'm just doing some personal research on the term "self tapping sheet metal screw". Since there is in fact no such thing as a self tapping sheet metal screw I am kind of currious how this term ever got started in the first place. It seems to be a fairly accepted term in most parts of the country. The screws you show in your picture are in fact self drilling sheet metal screws. do you have any insight as to how or why the term self tapping is substituted for self drilling? Self tapping is a term used for machine screws that cut their own threads as opposed to a sheet metal screw that drills it's own hole.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might be able to offer.

Oh goody!!!!!! Another "bun fight".

http://www.answers.com/topic/self-tapping-screw

http://www.fasnetdirect.com/kaneprls.asp?SellCode=AWS07

http://www.boltandtooldirect.com/store/ ... crews.html

These folks, as noted above, seem to think that there is such a thing as a self tapping sheet metal screw.

There is also the self drilling/tapping screw:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheet_meta ... etal_screw

And it's been said I'm prone to "pendantic debate"!

I have no experience with "studs" as we simply do not have snow here! We do have self tapping screws and self drilling screws in stock in my garage.

I appreciate "exact" use of our language, but not when the user is inaccurate to be exact.

Cheers,

Gus

A far more important distinction in my opinion, at least as it relates to winter pedalin', is that the purpose of studded tires is to make riding on ice possible. For snow, aggressive knobbies or super wide flotation tires are generally sufficient...

Yeah, I know what their inteded uses are ... I'm in the midwest so when it does snow its after or just before a huge temp change. I'm sure you guys know what that means ... the snow isnt just snow, there is something under it. ( I'm not talking about all wet roots. )

From all my buddies out there all with various ghetto "snow tires" , some had the zip-tie's for chains thing, one had studded nokians, one with regular tires. None of us had a pugsley or " the like"... so I have no experiance. There was a "trak" of what apeared to be a really wide tire, but it had some hybrid ( not a lot of "tread" in the center bigger ones toward the side. ) knobbie design in a dirctional pattern .... I think I had the best time, I def. went back the next day ...
