So I like to go camping for extended periods at a time  But I have pets :woohoo: so do you take your pets with you and risk them around other animals ( grizzly and cougar ) or do they stay home with a sitter

...we have two mutant chi who a who a's and they go most places with us...not much in the way of grizzly's and such to worry about down here and they make excellent foot warmers in the winter time...we do on occasion leave them at home when we take shorter trips.............

I have to take my furry kid with me. She has to have insulin shots twice a day.....Besides that, she loves to go camping!

Overnights they stay home and my neighbor Jim looks in on them Am and PM to let them out to potty.

For the 2 or 3 night outings they generally join us.

We currently have a cat. He's an indoor guy, and he doesn't travel with us. Not because we don't want him with us, but he's old and set in his ways, and doesn't deal well with changes of scenery. Our next animal will be a dog, specifically so we can take him with us when we camp and travel to see family. That'll enable us to go away for more than three or four days at a time. And it's easier to find someone to dog-sit if the need should arise, as most of our friends here have dogs.

We got Lance to go camping with me. Big black dog, not many will come close enough to ask if he is freindly or not. Beside he is fun.

I have two dogs. When I go solo camping, I bring both, but when going to a gathering, I try to bring just one. My beagle seems to do better around lots of people and my rottie/lab likes hanging out with his Boston Terrier buddy at a friends place once in a while.

Depends...

My goldens are getting up there in the years and they don't tolerate heat too well. I'll go to a gathering with them, but will monitor the weather to make sure they won't overheat. Their safe place is in the back of my Rav4 and they also eat their food in there, so it has to be cool enough that they they can be inside the car.

I miss them when I don't camp with them!!

Hugs,

I take my 12 foot pet Boa when we go camping.
He's usually pretty well minded, but sometimes has yappy little dogs for a snack...

...Just kidding...

Used to take a big dog camping when I was younger, and always wanted to take the cat, but was too afraid she'd be scared by all the dogs and run off and meet an unpleasant end.

We took our parakeet once on a trip to Beaver's Bend State Park, OK. She didn't have a good time - so now she stays at home.

Wanted to vote " most of the time they come camping"

They get to come along on most of the trips. Joshua Tree was an exception, cactus and dogs just don't go well together. Pat of the reason I build the tear was so it would be easier to take our canine kits with us.

We bring our German Shepherd with us when we can. Tupper is a sweet dog, very low key, and is usually off lead in our campsite. If we leave the campsite, we'll leash her. She sleeps in a crate in the van - and actually prefers the crate a lot of the time to hanging out with us in the rain. I can't imagine why. We leave the van and crate doors open and if we're missing her, we'll find her in the crate, snoozing.

I have until now not brought one of our dogs with camping. But we got a new 5 month old puppy 6 weeks ago. She is very quiet and low key so I took her to the ITG4 gathering. What a great dog. Several campers even commented on how good she was. Maybe she has earned another outing. It was fun to have her with since I camp alone.

Here is Marley............

My dogs are not ALWAYS by my side, but my late dog "Casey" (AKA: Caseydog) loved to go camping. She would hike into the woods with me, and sleep in my tent.

My new dog, "Teddy" (AKA: psycho poodle) has not been camping yet in my TD. I need to do a backyard camp some night to see how he does. He has jumped into the TD to check it out.
