Cold War era Russian Coleman Lantern

Postby rainjer » Sun Oct 02, 2011 5:07 pm

A friend of mine had this lantern sent to me from his brother in Moscow. It is a Cold War 220 lantern made in the Soviet Union by Coleman. There are very few left. Most were destroyed it he 1980's.

Note that instead of a glass globe they used a wire mesh globe. This was so they would not break in cold weather.

Even the direction disc is in Russian.

Light for each according to their need...

Wow! Thanks for showing us the Marxist lantern! I wonder if there are other advantages/disadvantages to using screen instead of glass, seems to me would be less fragile, anyway. Too cool!

I wonder if the mesh is original or made to replace an unfindable globe.................... 8)

Wow I had no idea that Coleman made stuff across the great pond. Looks like a mock up to me . My trained eyes see a FAKE!

Coleman did indeed have lanterns manufactured in other countries... under license...

I knew of Great Britain, Brazil, etc... but the Russian agreement with Coleman was more than likely made before the ICBM crisis in the late '50s...

Very cool find, Jeremy. Very interesting. :-)~

Ok I have to ask the 64,000 question.

Is it really real? I'm not disputing the origin of the lantern being made in the CCCP. Its just that it looks refurbed and the stickers are brand new.

I'm thinking it was more of a joke. I may try to find other pics of similar lanterns.

Someone has 'Russianised' the Coleman name by spelling it something like Koulman so that a Russian would pronounce it 'coal-man' and not 'col-man' - which seems like going to some trouble for a fake.

The bit that makes me doubt it is the portrait of Uncle Joe - what's he doing on an American-designed product, even if that product was built by the proud hands of a glorious worker?
