Hot Rod...Burning down the house!!!

Postby Martiangod » Tue Jan 10, 2012 12:23 am

Well bought this thing a few years ago
Image
When I got laid off this fall I got bored...bet you all heard that one before
And I came up with this idea
Image
and then the fun began. Working outside in the snow and blow and balmy January we're have. So far I framed up off the 24 inch sides and skinned with 3/8 ply. I then cut crowned rafters from 2x4's at 16" OC and skinned the roof in 3/8 ply.
Roof was the covered with White TPO rv roofing material and trimmed out around with Aluminum insert trim.
Insulation is 2" SM in the roof and 1 1/2 foil coated foamboard in the walls.
Floor will be insulated from beneath with 2" SM
Paneling started going up today
More pics tomorrow
The build I'm after is a dual purpose trailer

A word to the wise, if your considering a TPO roof and have any transitions from curve to flat, the TPO will not conform as rubber does and buckling will occur at the transition point :{
Notice front where tpo meets diamond, hard to see in pic
Image
And a few more shots of where I stand
The rear wall and door
Image
Closet built last night. had this cool aluminum coat rack/shelf from a greyhound, been in storage for 20 years, found a use
Image
Insuation is all foil tapes and spray foan in any and all gaps
Image
And so it goes on
Image
Now what to do today...

Got the flooring in and picked up a few things, clearance lights, licence light and such, wired in and installed interior light.
A warranty out thermo glass window, heavier, but warmer and no condensation
May regret it but went with a fiberlass backed lino. Supposed to resist rot and mildew, we'll see how easy it tears...lol
Image
Got some more paneling up then got called for a few days work...oh well, trailer on hold for a few
This is prooving to be more spendy then anticipated....lol

Sorry for the job situation.

That is gonna be a sharp rig when you finish. I like that paint scheme you're planning.

still hashin out a few things, RV siding is prooving to be expensive so as much as I don't want to it may get 24" roll 19 gauge aluminum, gonna get too utility looking I think, paint may still pull it out.
Another delema is heat. I'm gonna put hot water in for sink and outside shower, thinking right now about Rads and havin hot water passive heat, hmmm. Furnaces are no big deal but I wanna try something different and appliances are expensive in canada, even at my cost, may help for extended dry camp not having to run furnace, battery and propane usage as compared to running furnace, my other thought would be a heater box from a car, forced air water heat...

Pics to follow, got the rear clearance lights and licence light installed on the weekend, finished my upper walls, ran some more wire and installed a threshold and weather strip on door, window installed, but moved it back from my photochop picture, bin in the minus 20's so its nice to be inside the warm trailer. Going to rewire the low mount licence light as a entry step light, no point waisting already installed features...lol
And my finished interior hight comes in a 68 1/2 inches, good for my short aZZ 5' 8 " hight, wifes shorter so its all good...One thing thing thats difficult at this point is motivation to keep moving forward, I get out there, turn on the heater, sit in my fold up chair and daydream...Ummm i mean plan the next step

Very nice MG!

I like the layout and style of your camper. Sorry to hear about the job - almost lost mine 2 years ago. Keep the pictures coming.

Take care,
Tom

Stopped at habitat for humanity store on way home tonight, got a 60ft roll of schluter Kerdi mebrane for $20, going to do a test piece tonight, glue to plywood and then paint, if works out going to try a painted fabric technique, if dont work well, will have nice waterproof mebrane under my aluminum :)
Schluter-KERDI is a bonded waterproof membrane with limited crack-bridging capabilities. It is made of soft polyethylene, which is covered on both sides with a special fleece webbing to anchor the membrane
Image
Image
Got the dual pane awning style window installed, installed low for sitting hight, its 48" x 18"
Image
And got the paneling installed above the waisteband,
Image
Also have the two interior lights I'm going to have installed and wired
Image
Front clearance lights
Image
Rear clearance and licence light
Image
just need to rewire the old licence light and put it on a switch, it will become the step/entry light.
Now campers love their party lights aka christmas lights, my answer to that is to switch the running lights and clearance lights to the battery/convertor
Well thats where it stands right now

What a joy working outside in the snow and blow. At least its warm in the trailer
This weekend I Insulated the floor from below with 2" foam, filled gaps with expanding foam, what a joy, spray foam dripping on me. I did remember to take off my new Work coat and put on my old one " BEFORE " i started :applause:
When I get another nice day going to trim expanding foam and skin underbelly with coroplast.
Got my AC breaker panel installed and wireing run, 12 volt spade fuse strip, mounted my solar controller, mounted 40 gallon water tank and started building gaucho/ 54" size bed.
Thinking I need to source a small window for the roadside for cross ventilation.
If nothing else its keeping me out of the wifes hair seeing as I'm not working...lol
Will get pics tomorrow

Well gettin there slowly
Electrical sort of done, still have to locate batteries to tounge box
AC Panel and plug for converter when I find one

Image

DC strip and Solar controller fused will also wire charge line from truck to fuse strip

Image

Water tank in, still need to strap it down and find my spare ShurFlow

Image

Gaucho framed

Image

In Bed Mode, will be 54 x 74 double

Image

Fenders framed and skinned

Image

Kiitchen...lol base, will house coleman for when we are dry camping and single burner Fridgidair induction cooktop for when we have trees to plug into and some sort of container storage for utensils
this is same hight as bed so with 1 extra ply i can level out the trailer for utility trailer mode
ImageFold down counter for stuff, or cooking in inclemet weather

will do some sort of backsplash i guess
Image

Still need to pick my water heater up from my storage shed at my park trailer and find my spare Shurflow pump

Went up to my park trailer storage shed to see what parts i had stashed, picked up my spare water heater and I had 2 sure flows

IT FIT...yay, mechanicals going in
Hot water tank fit :)
Its an older Atwood 6 gal i rebuilt, new gas control and preasure valve

Image

Few stains on cardboard but its all good, will build styro cube around it so no biggy

Image

City water, tank fill and cable hatch installed

Image

And pump in and plumbed to tank and city water, just need some more PEX to get over to the Hot Water Tank

Image

Mechanical rooms gettin a little crowded...lol

Image
Still have to run gas line to front compartment and wire pump switch and all that other stuff
And with the second shurflo, I'm thinkin computerfan and shurflo thermostat controled pumping hot water through a heater core for a car for my heating system, that way I don't need to source a furnace or loose more room to a furnace

build inspiration

Postby PcHistorian » Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:35 am

Well thank you sir. Lots of build ideas and inspiration for me. Must be nice to have all that side room and head room to work with. So far I only have your "insulate the floor from underneath" idea for mine. I have a surface of the 1/2 styro-type sheets sized to my floor, but I cringe at the use of the 1/2 inch as the panel walls are already going up. I'll get started on a "Build journal" myself. great idea.

Weather is my biggest enemy right now, gettin lots done inside but can't do much outside, although for working in the snow, its been a great winter so far.
My test pieces with the Kerdi were sort of a fail no fail.
Love the texture when its painted, test piece with water based flooring adhesive bubbled.
Test piece with spray on 3M contact ahesive bubbled initially but with rolling out for an hour or so it stuck excellent
Painted with oil base rustolium paint, finish is just what I want. Bonus would be the Kerdi is 100% waterproof.
SO I'm still out on what to side it with
But its funny how these things can morph into somthing else.
I started out with a cross between a cargo trailer that could be used as a wooden tent on weekends,,,:)
But the colors and interior inside its morphing into more of a CAMPER/ utility trailer.
If I can come up with the right texture on the exterior, lightly pebbled, paint a pueblo sandy color with a little red to appease my
everything must match mentality,,,IE: red truck...I'm thinking the exterior may end up more like this.

Image
Now all I need is $$$ some tru spoke wheels and air bags for slammin it when I pull into the park...lol
Oh, and maybe some dingle balls :)
