Forum technical problems - apostrophes

I have this little problem. Actually, I have lots of little problems. But I'll only talk about one today.

I hope it is in my browser settings, but I cannot figure it out. I attached a screen shot of some text on this forum, and you can see that every time there is an apostrophe I get weird symbols. I don't know what the deal is. I'm not a dummy about this stuff, but I'm stumped on this one. Anyone happen to know what's wrong? It's not a big deal, but it is just annoying.

It's the font you are using in your browser. I have the same issue when I convert ebooks from one format to another. Symbols that are missing from one font set or the other get substitutions like the one you are showing.

That seems likely, but changing the font does nothing (even after clearing cache). The strange thing is that some of them show up correctly, and some like the photo above. This is true of apostrophes, quotation marks, ampersands, and some other punctuations. I've tried a list of different browser font settings, to no avail. The results are the same in both Firefox 11 and IE 9.

What browser are you using and what is the font set to?

Have you tried a different browser yet, like Chrome, Firefox or Opera?

I've tried a list of different browser font settings, to no avail. The results are the same in both Firefox 11 and IE 9.

The characters you just typed, Mike, are showing fine. Very confusing.

Specifically, it happens when text is being stored as UTF-8, but for some reason, the program displaying the text thinks it's being stored as Latin-1 (or something similar). One thing that can cause this is if the server is misconfigured. The page itself correctly claims to be encoded in UTF-8 (look at the first line of the source), but the server claims that it's encoded in Latin-1. It seems that in a situation where the page and server conflict, browsers trust the server, which in this case is the one that's wrong.

What I'm seeing is those funny characters in the first line of most of my old posts, then the rest of the post is missing altogether.

It may be a conversion error from the shared server to the dedicated server.
