"Hypno-Toad's Command Post." Door and windows in!

Postby jeff0520 » Mon May 14, 2012 9:51 pm

I started the build today. Most of the day was eaten up by 2 shopping trips, one to Harbor Freight to get a portable garage, and one to Lowe's for material. Once I had everything I needed, I got started putting up the portable garage. That thing was a TOTAL pain to assemble and set up, complicated by the fact that the sky kept opening up and pouring down rain. (Proving how much I needed the portable garage in the first place I guess.)
Once the garage was up, I did get to cut some wood though. I got all my floor support spars cut to length. At that point, I ran into 2 separate problems at once. First, I only have one extension cord working right now. The other one needs a new end put on it. It was getting dark, so I had my choice of power for a light, or power for a saw, but not both.
There was also the continuing problem of the pouring rain. It had been raining hard and steady for about an hour at that point. The back yard started to flood. 2 inches of water is usuallt no big deal, but my lumber was stacked on the ground. I admitted defeat for the night, put the lumber up on the trailer chassis, and called it a night.
I didn't take any pictures because I didn't want to take my digital camera outside in the monsoon. So, I'll fill in the picture lack with a very good picture of US!!. I hope you enjoy. :D 91966

Welcome to the board! Congratulations on starting your build!
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

Congratulations! If I don't buy one quick I will probably start building one. Got the TTT bug bad and it's eating me alive.

Good start Jeff, just keep the dang rain over there fora while so I can get another coat of paint on mine!! just teasing ya, important thing is you did get started and that sometimes is the hardest point. If I was closer I'd loan you some, only have 6 or 7 extension cords in the garage. What style of tear are you building and are modifying any plans of it?

Cliff
In God we trust, shoot the rest and he will sort out!

Congratulations on starting the build!!

How long have you been lurking? I found that if I would've dug a little more, a lot of the things I fought to figure out were on here in various sections. Search a lot if you run into any questions and don't be afraid to post up if you can't find the answer. There were some answers that were here, but that I didn't find searching. Generally was a problem with the search that originated between the chair and the keyboard for me. :)

Have fun!

Hey Cliff,
I'm building a tiny travel trailer, not a teardrop. I bought as copy of Dale Summer's squidget plans, but I'm modifying them to fit a big ol' boy like me :)

Actually, I haven't been lurking at all. I developed the idea of building an RV after we visited a dealer and nearly died from sticker shock. I found out about this forum from the recommended reading list in my squidget plans :)

It's a good day :) Here is where I started:
92128

Today was the day to frame out the floor.
92129

Of course I faced the problem that everyone has building on the HF chassis. The big bolt heads sticking up. I laid my frame on top, made sure it was squared up, then whacked the wood on top of the bolt heads with a big rubber mallet. As I figured, it left a dent in the wood where the bolt head rests. I took a 7/8ths drill bit and made a recess for the bolt head to lie in. As a bonus, they ended up acting like locater pins to keep the frame square while I added all the other parts :)
92130
92131

after the recess is drilled, the wood floor frame sits down nicely :)
92132

Here is where I finished for the day :)
92134
92133

I'll have more time to work tomorrow. I hope to get the sub-floor down, and the insulation and underside waterproofing installed.
Jeff

Today is my first day of vacation, so I'm getting a good bit done. I have applied the first coat of fibrous roof coating as a waterproof undercoat for the bottom of the floor structure. :)

I hope to get the insulation applied, and another coat on it today

Floor insulation is glued in place. Waiting on glue to dry, then I'll re-coat with the fibrous roof coating :)

Having a delay in building right now. The A/C in the house went out. We use window units, so I went to Lowe's and spent this months build budget on a new unit. Lowe's gets double points for that. Not only did they have the best price, but they had a funny clerk too. After they pulled it, I went to the service desk and asked for help loading. I told the guy "I haven't lifted it, but I can feel the heaviness radiating off it from here." The Lowe's guy grabbed a yardstick, leaned on it like a cane, extended a hand toward the A/C unit, and in a perfect Yoda voice said, "Mmm, The gravity is strong with this one"

Well, using what I had in stock, I made 6 flat metal brackets to permanently attach the floor structure to the trailer frame, got them painted, and installed them. The floor should never move on the frame again :) I also finished up framing the wheel wells, and made the top skins for them. I'm stuck now until we get over the shock of having to replace the A/C in the house
Sorry about the lack of pictures. It was dark by the time I finished up.
