FL 5x9.5 Side walls mocked up 8/18/12 pg.2

Postby GRY GHST » Sun Jul 29, 2012 2:25 pm

Well I've been searching the web for a few weeks and now I'm starting my first build.
Image
Got my HF 4x8 w/ 20% off last night then ran to HD this morning for some wood.
also found a computer desk in the dumpster by the house and grabbed the slide out off of it.
Image
The trailer is just about together, then I can start the floor.

taking some cues from Zack's XII build

Nice start. How do you plan on using the computer shelf?

@pjo129 - the computer shelf will be a pull out for either a cooler or stove.

JMO
I can not see the slide out being able to support a stove or cooler on its own. I there was times with my old computer desk that it barely held a keyboard or hands at the same time. be careful. pics would help of it

started the framing

Postby GRY GHST » Mon Jul 30, 2012 6:06 pm

@ Forrest - I will have support for under it if I use it. I'm thinking mainly just to slide it out from under a counter.

I put the fenders on and got some work done on the sleeping area floor framing today.
the 2x4s are lag bolted to the steel frame. the 1x2s were dadoed in and will be glued and screwed
Image
the battery/batteries will go under the floor in front of the axle.
there will be storage under floor in the section in front of that.
I also plan on making a ramp the stores under the frame to slide out so my dog can get in and out with ease.

didn't get much done today. picked up some 1x8x8s for the frame sides. mocked up the battery placement and tongue
Image
battery compartment will hang 5" below the frame, this should leave plenty of clearance.
Image
also picked up a new cooler from target

got a few pieces of wood cut today (no new pictures) did not have much time to work on it.
*been pondering the need to move my axle back or leave it stock.
took some measurements the bed base 60x80 will start 7.25" forward of the steel frame and end 19" behind the axle (stock placement). I plan on running a 5000btu window ac in the rear and the batteries will be in front of the axle. any feedback would be appreciated.

if I work a long day tomorrow I'll have friday off and should be able to complete the base ::fingers crossed::

got the sleeping deck cut to size after work today 60"x80" I just need to join the two pieces now
Image
I've decided to cut down the 2x4s (now that I got my table saw out) to drop the deck to just on top of the fenders.
I will will have the majority of the day tomorrow to work on the tear so I should make some progress.

Nice work John. I like the dadoed 1x2s. I definitely went overkill with more 2x4's there.

I did notice one thing in that last picture.... it looks like you're missing the bottom plate at the end of the tongue and some bolts :o

Thanks Zach, did you ever get the total weight on the XII

(the tongue is just mocked up it's not completed.)

Yeah... its a little hefty, not too bad though. My Subaru still moves pretty well with it. 1100lbs, with a group 27 battery.

not bad at all my V50 is rated for up to 2000lbs with a 200lb tongue weight, but I'm still shooting for as light as possible with a quick build.

The hitch for the Volvo came in yesterday, I'll likely get it mounted at some point this weekend. I still need to get a wiring harness though.
Image
I did not get much accomplished today. I did get the 2x4s cut down to the height of the fenders. I also got the tongue crossmember bolted up.
Image
I'm also leaning toward mounting the AC in a tongue box and hacking it to vent up into the cabin (per Shadow Catcher's thread)
the cardboard represents the outline of the stock LG 5000btu unit from Home Depot $99

re-dadoed the 2x4s since I ripped them down last night to drop the deck
Image
then joined the two deck sections together with biscuits and gorilla glue
Image
not sure what to do now since the glue needs to cure, maybe install the hitch on the V50

pick up a 26"x32" emergency exit window off craigslist. it looks like it was meant to be mounted horizontally, I was hoping to mount it vertically does anyone know if this would cause any issues (IE: leaking)?
Image
Image
I also ran to Northern tool and picked up a tongue jack on sale $17.99
