Pulled my trailer out of the garage for the first time and snapped a photo of the tv with the trailer. It looks much shorter than I imagined. Oh well; it is what it is!

Got the body minus the hatch painted with two coats of white this weekend and boy does it ever make a difference!

I leave Friday for the test camping trip and i still don't have my hatch finished and my doors in place so we may be roughing it a bit.

Hopefully the doors and hatch can make the trip!

Looking great Angela!! Question for ya, are you leaving your doors facing that way? IF you are make sure doors are shut and locked every time you travel, if they open while your driving the wind will catch and rip the door off the tear.

Re: My first build "Ruby Red" FIRST CAMPING TRIP

We had a successful trial run in the camper. The hatch and galley were not finished but we certainly made everything work. I'm posting a few pictures.

Camped at McKenny Campground on Lake Allatoona. Wanted to be close to home in case of a problem. I leave next Thursday for the 4 day Music Festival in FLorida 'Magnolia Festival' Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris just two of the headliners!

I'll take pictures :pictures:

Re: My first build "Ruby Red"

Well it's been over 2 years since I last posted. Life changes have moved me to FL (awesome) and I'm finally getting back to working on my TD. I plan to rebuild the hatch because with my design, it is just too heavy and dangerous. I plan to make the bottom 1/3 of the current hatch stationary and make the top much shorter. I've only seen one other example on this site 8) but it was plans only not actually completed.

Any help someone might have would be appreciated. I'm ready to get back in the camper. I have so many State Parks to explore here in FL!!

Hi Ange,
I have just had a look through your build posts, good to see what you have done. Re the hatch, I couldn't really see how big it is or its construction. Is the problem that it is too heavy to lift easily? Have you considered gas struts. With my one I have used gas struts and we release the catch give it a little lift then stand back and it glides up on it's own.
Also Ruby is a good name. We have a dog named Ruby. She got the name from one of our cars, a 1936 Austin Seven Ruby.

Sorry ChunkyMonkey, not intentionally trying to hijack your thread. :R
But Frank, it seems we keep having more and more in common with the more that gets posted.
A very very good friend of mine from the vintage car club restored a 1935 Austin 7 named "Ruby" some 40 years ago, when I was just adventuring into "Restoring".
Always loved that little car.

thanks for the comments:

The first Hatch I built in a hurry, just to put a cover on it for an event. It was too rushed but the main problem with my hatch is the weight. My profile has two curves and two curves made my hatch design difficult. My rebuild will make a fixed bottom and a shorter hatch opening both will be much lighter also. I may also elect to use the gas struts.

Ruby Red is not red....yet... but will have some Red on her some day.

I will post pictures of my rebuild as I make some progress. Today i removed the first hatch and salvaged all the bendable ply and insulation. I'll start fresh with the skeleton. That GLUE we use is tough but I persisted! :?
