Curry Hammock State Park In FL?

Postby jambie » Tue Nov 27, 2007 2:31 pm

We've made reservations at Curry Hammock S.P. in Marathon, FL in May for our first big trip in the Camp Inn. I found out about it here:

It got rave reviews from the folks who stayed there, so I thought I'd check here for any more info.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

A year and a half ago I stayed in Curry Hammock for a week and Bahia Honda for a night. I was an excellent experience. Nice and new. Bahia Honda has the better beaches though.

Getting a site can be difficult due to popularity. We got luck getting a week long chunk at Curry Hammock being that we made our reservations only a month in advance.

There are more pics in my on site photo gallery.

This was our site. The plants have probably grown since the photo was taken.----

Hi John,

Thanks for the great pics. It looks like a nice campground. I looked at Bahia Honda, but they didn't have the dates I wanted. I have heard that the Curry Hammock beach has more seagrass on the gulf floor, so it isn't as great for swimming, but your beach pic looks great. Any thoughts? We do want to rent some sea kayaks, as well.

Thanks again for the reply!
Cheers,
Tom

It takes forever for the water to get waist deep and yes there was plenty of sea grass. If you look at the pic of me standing in the water you can see where the sea grass starts. The water looks a little darker where the sea weed begins. I noticed that the sea grass seemed to be on all the keys, but that may have been due to the time of year. The beached seemed to be rake clean of it. Despite the see grass I did some snorkeling in it. I saw it as practice for later. Bahia Honda offers a snorkeling trip out to a reef which I took advantage of. I got a little cold it but was totally worth it, and although the water was clear for the time of year, the water is apparently clearest in the summer. Most of my trip was in March.

I wish I had had a canoe with me. The canoing would have been great around there. There was a channel at the north end of the island near the campground that I think went to the gulf.

I never made it to the gulf side of the island.

Enjoy the exploring.
