figuring how open I want the bracket to hold the glass. I shoot for 1/3 of the window opening. 6" roughly at the top of the window glass, this does not protrude to deeply, but still gives a great about of airflow for in between needs. On my old tear I set the distance the same, I never shut the windows fully unless I'm sleeping in the tear and don't want the airflow.
