As the title says, "158 Days and FINALLY finishing the Cargo Conversion"

The road to completion has been a rocky and expensive one. There has been tears, and blood, shed during this process. There has been arguments and conflicts over the design and quality of products... not to mention finances (lol).

We purchased the trailer with a desire to build a hotel on wheels. The idea came from a bad experience in a hotel. We worried about cleanliness and struggled with the thoughts of who AND WHAT had happened, or been in, the bed before us. Honestly I would gladly spend the cost of fuel knowing that I can sleep in my own bed, anywhere and anytime I wished.. and I did not have to give some random hotel clerk my credit card.

We drove to San Diego, from Anaheim, to purchased the trailer. We purchased a 2025 Pace American Outback DLX. She is 7' wide.. 16' long and 7' high (inside height).

On the way back to Anaheim we talked about how great this was going to be. We tossed out ideas on our needs, wants and desires for this build. Not once did we, at this moment, talk about a budget.

We parked the trailer and immediately taped out a floor plan..

This was going to be built fast and for as little money as possible. Please remember I said this, for later into my story...

I started the build the next day by removing all of the walls and putting in insulation.. I meticulously measured, cut and installed it. I planned out wire locations, plumbing and windows. I keep thinking, "This is so easy.. why isn't everyone doing good this?". This is another statement that I will ask you to remember.....

Days went by and I had it all ready for the build. I went to Home Depot and purchased wood to start the build.

I was excited and ready to go. While I was framing the partially raised floor, I decided to start looking for appliances. A cooktop, Microwave and refrigerator. I figured thats all I needed for the kitchen.. I found a refrigerator that was around 4 cf. A cooktop and a basic microwave. I was happy.

I researched power options. I figured out what I thought I needed for solar. I was (notice I used the word, "WAS") going to go to Amazon and buy a simple 200W predesigned system. One of those Harry Homeowner systems. 30A shore power.. I was ready to go.

At this point I was on target and well within a manageable, yet undetermined, budget.

Design wise, I was not looking to win any trophies. All I needed was a bed, a place to cook and maybe, using the word, "maybe" very strongly, a bathroom.

I started looking around the internet. This was where it all started unraveling. I saw what Winnebago, Airstream, Jayco and everyone else was doing. I went to YouTube and started watching custom builds.. some I was jealous over, and others... well.. I wondered what they were thinking. Then it hit me. I did not want to be one of those that people wondered what, "I" was thinking.

I tossed out all or my ideas, except the floor plan. I figured if I was going to do this, then let's do it.

I see this is starting to get really long, so I will cut out all the boring parts..

I went from a 200W predesigned system to a 800W custom designed solar array. I went from a 4 cf refrigerator to a 10.1 cf with freezer. I went from 1 bed to 2 beds...... a microwave, airfryer, convetion (7 different things) oven.... the list, and expenses, kept building.

In the build process, there was about 3 weeks where I would go to the trailer, sit in the middle of the floor with my face in my hands wondering what the **** did I get myself into? The garage was full of boxes containing, what seemed like, enough stuff to build and outfit a small house.

I am glad all of this is now in the past. I am glad that I only have a few more items to do and should be completed by Monday 10 November 2025.

I was not able to stay within a budget. We did try a few times to limit the cost. We kept upgrading and changing our desires.

We are just over $30,000 into this build... if I was to go back in time, I would do it all over again.

This turned out to be a mansion on wheels..

We are planning our first trip next week... I'll keep you guys posted lol

I feel for you.... Today, I could never bring myself to build another trailer. I did my 6x12 back in 2018, just before all financial **** broke loose. That was around $10k then, and based on the cost of materials for the "what the **** did I get into" truck camper I just built, I know my trailer would be over $20k today. It's nuts !

Heck, I go to the store for a couple of hinges, a stick of straight lumber, a package of screws and a Coke... What ?? $69.95 ??? !!!! It's unreal now. I swear the truck camper is my last project. I am retired. I know I have no more years left in me to make more money.. Like you, I too just sat there and wondered why I was doing this truck camper when I already have a trailer. But, it sure is a lot of fun making things the way you want them.

Truth be told, I do have one more "build" this next spring. Oh sure, I have that "I'll just do a basic" blah, blah feeling, but I already know how this is going to go. I'll have at least double in it than I think. The good news is I think I can make some money on this build. At least that is what I am telling my wife. If she divorces me, at least I will have my choice of THREE different rigs I can live in !

I keep telling her its kind of like my last Boat project, and general "boat rules". You absolutely have to have at the very minimum, TWICE as much in it than you can sell it for. It's the only way you can do a boat.

Well, have fun camping with it. At least you can enjoy the mansion you built. It's water over the dam.

Trailer Conversions, no matter how you go about it, is an expensive endeavor. For the money I have spent on this, I could have bought 2 stamped out, factory made trailers.

I know this is not my last build. I have tossed out the idea of selling this one and building a Teardrop, as I should have done in the first place (lol), maybe build one or two Teardrops sell along the way.

I have had two solid offers on the trailer before it was even completed. I turned down both.. (obviously lol)..

Looks great! They can really add up quickly! I have over $31K in mine so far and it isn't finished! However, we have camped in it for over seven years (387 nights so far). That $31K number equates to $82 per night. We couldn't have stayed in hotel/vrbo etc for that in places we have traveled to. Yes, it does cost more than you think to build but if you look at it on a per night basis it can be easier to swallow, ha!

I hope it is my last build (famous last words) as I am too anal about things to do this again (can't you tell by the per night cost breakdown).

The $30,000 I have in it, doesn't count the cost of the trailer. Those figures also only count what American Express has billed me for.. so far.. lol

I dont think this is my last build. I was bitten by a trailer building bug 🐛

My next build will be much smaller lol

>>> I was bitten by a trailer building bug...

Well, I get that ! I know exactly where I got the "bug"... I was 10. My Uncle had a "camper van" parked at my Grandmothers house. Inside was a JC Whitney catalog. I'd literally dream for hours of all the stuff I was going to put in my Van someday.

Since, I've done dozens of conversions, starting with Vans, then step vans (when they were cheap), and box trucks. I've included a picture of my all time favorite.

Bottom line, if you just want to "camp"... go by a camper. If you want to express yourself with a wonderful hobby you can sleep in, BUILD something. My brain still want to build stuff, but sadly, I wake up every morning now and old man with a lot of hard miles. Enjoy while your young. Maybe try to KEEP your favorite as I always flipped around thinking a different build would settle my soul.

JC Whitney.. wow thats a name I have not heard in many years.

I am not a spring chicken myself. I turned 55 this year, and I wake up every day the same way.. but I feel I might have a build or two left in me. I may have oversized this project a bit.. I should have stayed small.. both in size and budget.. so dont be surprised if this one pops up for sale lol 😆

Take note though.. "Small" generally means you really need to watch the weight. By the time I have the things I think I need in my 6x12, I am right there up against the 2990lb Single Axle registered limit.

I would like it to be less! Of course, it has same axle on trailers they tag at 3500lbs when they have factory added brakes. I added brakes, but those added another 60lbs... cant win !

Its a very common 'got ya'. The pipe dreams cause a creep in features and then cost balloons. I thought I was strict with myself building a foamy. Some stuff still got snuck in.

True, but then there was the, "For a few dollars more we can get......" so there was a lot of upgrades. I had no intension of putting an awning on the side, but now I have a 16 x 8 monstrosity, just because we were at an RV Show and they caught our eye. I wanted a small shower/toilet area combo.. now we have a 32" x 32" shower.. a custom cut quartz countertop, and a residential height Thetford Toilet.. Microwave? Yes, but there are 7 different things you can do with it.. Microwave, Convection, Air fry, Bake and all of this stuff that I am sure we will never use...

LOL

I have said this several times, and I honestly believe it... If I could go back in time, and know what I spent on my conversion and how it was built.... I would do it all over again.

Life got in the way for the past few weeks and I was unable to keep my goal of being finished on Monday 10 November 2025.

I have painted a bit over that time, but I was unable to dedicate the time I had planed on putting in to it.. life jumped back out of the way and I am back on track.

I still have a lot to paint, but here are some photos to show my most current progress:
