A member is building a Tony Latham inspired teardrop trailer for himself and his wife, who has MS and uses a wheelchair. The design is being modified with less head-end storage for the member’s 6-foot-5 height, wider doors for a passive hoist when needed, thicker side and inner walls, and added grab handles to help his wife move inside. The build is being done within an existing trailer structure due to local legal requirements.

Hello all,

I posted awhile ago in the general forum about building a teardrop for me and my wife who has MS and is wheelchair bound.
After searching forums facebook, youtube you name it etc. And so many idea's i decided to start and make it simple i bought Tony Lathams book as a guide and that is gonna be the shape of my teardrop with some adjustments. I am 6foot5 so the the storage at my head needs to go or be alot smaller. The doors are gonna be a bit wider to accommodate a passive hoist when needed to get my wife inside when she feels real bad. Normally i slide her on a slidingboard from the wheelchair inside the teardrop the sidewalls are also gonna be a bit thicker and the innerwall aswell so i can mount alot of handles inside for her to grab on when she needs to move herself inside.

Here my first picture where i am building inside the trailer which i don't want to disturb the structure cause of laws here.

Greetings all,

Wim

Thicker walls are a plus but a strong wood should be considered as well for where the hoist is getting attached. Oak or stronger. I'd reccomend canary, strong and beautiful.

I'd love to see a layout plan!

I made a platform to work on that fits on top of the trailer, and i glued the template for the side walls together.

Started with the lofting of the template, having some troubles with the imperial fractions not used to it.
it is slowly progressing today.

I started with fairing the template, i have no power here so everything needs to be done by hand, man what a job... not fun any tips? The rasp bites too hard in the material so i am using a sanding block and a spokeshave.
