This is the camper I built a few years back and I have an awning track up near the top of the wall. I've been toying with the idea of building a flip up awning with a fold out wing on each side to provide protection from the sides. My issue is the wind tearing the tarp off/snow load and constant flapping tarps. My camper now rides on a different trailer and I've tried a couple different configurations of straight tarp off the side, and lately a wall tent frame [see pic], the tent frame works but it's not very convenient.
I have a couple questions if anyone can help me out with:

Is there a thread on this site where someone has done something like I'm considering? So I can check it out?

I was thinking about making a 2x2 frame and then using canvas as a cover then painting with a waterproof stain. Sort of like making a frame for an oil painting? Size would be around 6 1/2 ' x 13 1/2 feet for the roof part of the awning.

We have Kedar rail on three sides of the tear and Kedar welting sewn into one side of the tarps. 17 years and some very good storms, lower the ends and we have not had a problem. I see way too many failures on the various RV FB pages.

That's what we've been using with 12x16 tarp. We get the kitchen wet a lot with blowing rain and snow, the tarp flaps in the wind and keeps us awake at night, and it collapses under a snow load. My thought was a 7' hard awning that flips up with side wings for support and weather protection [and maybe a support midway], putting the awning track on the bottom edge of the hard awning to extend length with tarps and poles for sitting under.
