  • Well, doggone. Ya could of fooled me! Thought we had two more in the no longer 'missing state.'
  • Same trailer plan as before?
  • Fred :peace:

yup same plans but a lighter frame. when we got the estimate the guy informed us that the frame as designed would be rated for 7000lbs  no need for that kind of overkill.. Can't wait to get it started... now where to find a 5'x16' sheet of diamond plate :?

  • Jason,
  • Have you been to Alaska Steel Co.?
  • They list:
  • 3003-H22 .100" & .125"x60x192 Bright finish sheet
  • 5086-H34 .125" & .188"x60x192 Semi bright mill finish sheet
  • 6061-T6 .125", .188", .250" & .375"x60x192 Mill finish plate
  • But why? I don't think that you will find tread sheet any thiner & will probably be difficult to bend.

We are planning to skin the roof of our TD/TDs with diamond plate. Thanks for the info  We will have to check it out on monday

Hi All,
I AM SOO LATE!!! Just read all of the Alaska posts - which I thoroughly enjoyed. I too have always wanted to see Alaska. My group has been discussing an AK cruise for 2008.

I'd have to quit designing and build something to make a 2008 gathering  , save for the trip, get to AK and back in two weeks  From Virginia?

Doesn't Amtrak haul cars?

I'm not good at posting stuff but I will check on rail hauling partway and post back!

  • Hi Toolie,
  • The Alaska Railroad is a modern passenger train. However, there are no tracks connecting to the Lower 48. www.alaskarailroad.com  Two weeks would mean a long hard drive just to get to the border in time to turn around for home.
  • Many tourist fly to Seattle/Vancouver for a boat cruise/train ride and fly home (or some combination).
  • The least expensive road trip might be to fly to Anchorage or Fairbanks, bring your tent camping gear and rent a car/suv. Camp independently (most of Alaska is public land) or do a combination of camp grounds, hotel, lodge, bed & breakfast.
  • There are also companies that rent equiped motorhomes & pickup campers of various sizes. Example: www.gonorth-camper.com
  • Note that some rentals do not allow travel on unpaved highways. While you can visit a large part of Alaska on the pavement, the rule limits your choices.
  • I guess these ideas are sort of "unteardrop" like, but consider them as an exploratory expedition for when you have more teardrop time. :)
  • BTW. In the near future, passports will be required to enter Alaska and re-enter the U.S.
  • Maybe we'll see you on the trail. Fred

Thanks Fred,

I was hoping that (if I could get it built in time) the Tear the car and I could ride the train partway to Alaska on an AutoTrain. It appears that the only one runs from Washington D.C. to Orlando FL - which doesn't help unless I'm rushing to Disney World.

My military friends don't have many good things to say about auto shippers.

Still, hope springs eternal! :) Something may work out.

Toolie,
Our trip from NY to AK took 8 days. I could have not stopped(MOA, Cabelas, Whitehorse) and made it in 6 days min. Those are long days pulling a TD. The only tough parts are near the end when you get frost heaves.
The drive would be a big expense for only 2 days in AK. I would highly recommend getting there some other way.

Heres a suggestion. If you can get the car/TD by rail to Jasper Park it would be a great drive up and give you more time in AK. You could fly & drive.

Our trip was 5 weeks and I felt rushed most of the time. That kind of took away from the trip of a lifetime feel. I will go back. Maybe in 2008. Have to finish paying for the last trip.

Go its awesome! -Ray

Hello, my wife and I noticed TD's on an RV show and have started to research building one of our own. We live in PWS and would love to see a get together if not this year(don't have a trailer yet) then next year.

Alaska Bear and wife. Happy to have another from the great North.

We have lots of information and hints including building for extreme zones. All we ask is that you share picture with us. Keeps the bubble oil level.
;)

I have been to Alaska four times and would go again in a heart beat especially for a teardrop gathering. Don't think that I would drive it again, but there is the ferry and it is alot nicer than driving. But you miss ALL te beautiful scenery that way, so it would be a toss-up which way I would go. Name the time and the Place and I will be on my way. Have friends in Tok, Homer, Coopers Landing and Sterling and would love to see them again. GO FOR IT AND YOU WILl  BE SURPRISED IN HOW MANY WILL BE THERE. :clapping hands: :DOH2:

Was there ever an AK meeting? Or a consensus as to when and where to have one? Just curious, we will be on the road all next summer, the first month or so in alaska, then heading back east to NY.

If there is a gathering, we might be able to swing by.

Hey Larry, I have been through your town four times on my way to Homer. Don't be surprised if you see a 1926 Ford Coupe pulling a Benroy pull up in your driveway next year. Am retired and love to travel, and am going to make it back to Alaska in the real near future. Is that Green Lake in your picture????? Can't remember if Hwy 97 goes by it or not. Went by so many lakes and rivers on my way up, that I have lost track of where they all are. Have six gatherings to go to this summer.
I have been trying to put pictures on my posts, but being a truck driver all my life, haven't the computer skills to do that, but when I do, Look out, I will be sharing my pictures with everyone.
