I often see unusual names of places crop up on this forum and others and wonder where in the **** they came from. I think most areas have a few.
We have one up the road a bit. A little place named Salmon Gums. No water within a bulls roar of the place, farming country.
It would seem it is named after a tree not a fishes mouth.
The bark of this particular eucalypt called a salmon gum, eucalypts are known generally as gum trees in Oz, turns a salmon pink about this time of year and the area has quite a few of these trees resulting in it being called Salmon Gums.
Take it easy.

I work in a hotel and see so many interestng names, I then look them up on the internet.

One of my favorites is Flower Mound Texas.

I live in Saint Paul Park a suburb of Saint Paul not in a park in Saint Paul

Karen,

Good one.
Next to Salmon Gums up the road is Grass Patch. Probably from a similar source as Flower Mound.

Take it easy.

I live close to a small town called North, South Carolina. Here is a really funny Cosby clip where a southern lady tries to explain the name of her hometown on his game show:

That video was funny. Bill Cosbys head was spinning like the needle of a compass.

There's always Intercourse, PA and Bird in Hand, PA. Both tourist centers also have the Enjoy t-shirts.

I used to live near Beaver Crossing, NE. A picture with an Interstate sign denoting the town made it into a men's mag. A semi-nude woman was running across the road in front of the sign. Politically incorrect, I know.

Best,
Tom

Here is a very popular Internet picture subject from Weed. One of these trips south I want to have my teenage twin boys to pose for a pic.

DJ,

That's interesting. Thanks for that.
There are a lot of Aboriginal names in our area where the the local native language is now lost and as a result it is a guess at best where the names come from or what they actually mean.
Many place names end in 'up' and there are differing opinions as to what the 'up' actually means. Meeting place or water are two common ones. Place names such as Gnowangerup, Gidgiegannup, Munglinup are typical. The 'up' ending only being found on names in the southwest corner of Australia. We have a Widgiemooltha up the road a bit and no one is really sure what it means.

Take it easy.

  • Eek
  • Eek means 'two eyes' in the local Yupik language. However, I came to believe the name is more related to the length of the runway between the river and the slough. :frightened:

How about Igo, CA and Ono, CA? Also, I've always thought Cucamonga, CA was an interesting name.

OK this one is fictional but it has always been a favorite of mine.
In the Disney TV series DuckTales the home base was located in " The Nowhere Atoll ".

When driving through Tennessee, on the interstate once, I saw
a road sign for"Bug Tussle".

Also: "Bucksnort"
