The brand-new 10' Dometic "bag awning" we installed less than 2 years ago has already exhibited signs of deterioration. NOT the awning itself, or the frame...but the BAG the awning zips into for storage on the side of the camper. The thin white plastic strip at the top that holds the bag together and that holds the plastic piping inside that slides into your aluminum rail and actually is holding the awning up...will begin to get crackly and crunchy and begin to split. It is inevitable. I had sprayed vinyl conditioner on it (and also the bag itself) several times but was noticing the plastic beginning to crack. After reading how difficult this can be to repair, and that the bag is not for sale as a stand-alone item, I decided to get more pro-active. I cleaned it all real well and then wiped it down with denatured alcohol. I then applied Gorilla Waterproof tape (black) over the top of the awning starting at the aluminum extrusion just below the screws that hold it to the trailer. This tape is SUPER-STICKY! Be careful as you apply it, it doesn't like to be re-located! I went the whole length pressing down as I applied it. Use a utility knife to cut it, it won't tear easily. It is shiny and looks like it will be very durable. So, if you have an awning like this that can still be saved by this method, I suggest doing it ASAP. They are getting quite expensive these days to replace. My 2
cents!
