An Atlanta couple with previous camping experience is considering a teardrop for trips centered on rail trails and greenways, towing with a 2023 Acura MDX SH-AWD that the member reports has a 5,000-pound towing capacity. Their main equipment question is whether a rear receiver could accommodate their existing 2-inch bike rack, with the two bikes and rack weighing about 100 pounds combined.

One member cautioned about vibration and bounce at the trailer’s rear and guessed that many teardrop...

Newbie here from Atlanta. My wife and I used to camp with our kids when they were young. We started in a tent, then a popup and followed by a Starcraft Travel Star hybrid camper. Then we bought a lake house and a boat. So the camper was sold. We still have the lake house, but I sold pontoon and recently our wooden boat and I'm done with boats forever except kayaks.

My wife and I enjoy cycling but we moved off the roads and bike on rail trails and greenways now for safety. No more mountain biking either. A teardrop seems like a good way to enjoy some nature and ride our bikes. I like the fact that some of them allow a receiver hitch to be installed on the back. My bike rack has a 2" tongue and I assume a teardrop will accommodate that. The tow vehicle is a 2023 Acura MDX with the SH AWD package which has 5000lbs of towing capacity.

I've probably watched 100 videos the last week on YouTube and the number of units out there is surprising. Now will I do this? That's the big question!

Jeff, welcome to the group. I’m a relatively new member in this forum, but have been on other RV Life forums for what seems like a very long time. Yes, there are a number of options out there so have fun trying to decide which one makes the most sense.

Because of the vibration and bounce at the back of a teardrop, I’m hesitant to say having a bike rack on the back is a good idea.

I chose a Timberleaf Pika for my solo rig, but have an Oliver that my bride prefers.

Good luck with your search…

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the bouncy nature of the teardrop. I'll pay close attention to that. Both bikes and the rack are probably around 100lbs total.

Depending on tow vehicle, trailer trailer tongue weight, etc.. Something like this might be an option:

Find your local teardrop camper group and take that tent out one more time but mingle with the group. They are all happy to show you their rigs and you will find yourselves invited to a giant pot luck dinner. That is when the hook is set and you will become a teardropper.
