I made a Yellow Jacket trap

I have had some problems with yellow jackets latly around the house. And have always had them when camping.

I do not swing at them I hear the do sting bad.

Take a plastic bottle soda, milk, and container you can toss later that will hold water.

you will need string or thread, meat and apple, water and liquid soap.

Cut a hole around the size of a penny. I used a knife and folded in a flap.

make one on each side about half way down.

fill the bottom with soapy water. I put in liquid dish soap and pored water on top and swirled.

Old meat or fresh cooked meat works best. Gets the aroma working.

Ties string or thead around it leaving extra string to hang it.

put some apple in the bottom. It will float.

put the meat inside the opening so it is a little above the side openings.

keeping part of the string on the outside of the top and screw top on. or tape it on and tape top closed if you used some other type of container.

I took a little meat and left it near it so they would be attracted to the area and removed it later.

If you can hang it somewhere so the wild animals that come in at night will not rip it up.

I 5 or 6 in an hour and non were near when I put it out.

It is my understanding that the wasps around West Coast campgrounds are attracted to sweet - sugar things most of the year but they switch to meat and protein in the Fall.
On a bike trip through the San Juan Islands one of the riders was slow in biting down on his smoked salmon sandwich and ended up with a couple wasps in his mouth. Ow ow ow :shocked!:

His is a site that is like mine. I find that the soap water works quicker.

I Use it in my flea trap (small bowl filled with soapy water set below a night light our cat brings them in then blams us.) and it works quick.

They used different things I didn't want to buy any more then I had to.

Meat smells as it get's old I have 10 to 15 in my trap now.

I talked to a guy who said if they are going after sweet but off the top of a soda bottle and invert it into the bottom and fill it with sugar waster I would tape it at the seam then toss it when it is full. However you might get honey bees too with this method.

Milk jug tip
No need to buy bags of ice for camping and the picnic cooler. Fill milk jugs or pop bottles with water and freeze. Once the ice melts, you have much needed water and a plastic container that can be made into a yellow jacket trap. Cut off the top, put it back on the bottle upside down like a funnel, and put something sweet in the bottom (pineapple juice is very effective) and bingo, picnic pests are bottled up. If you plan ahead, you can cook a dish for a picnic or camping trip, freeze it, and use it instead of ice to keep things cool.
