Has anyone used this trailer from Northern Tool. What is your opinion on the tongue design and coupler mount in particular? It is $529. I've also looked at carry on in 5 x 8, but it is $650 and so is the Red trailer. Harbor Freight seems poorly made....?

How many cans of worms have I opened.

Look at the shipping on these trailers. I started to buy one but once I factored in shipping I was looking at 700 to 800.

I was able to have a much nicer trailer built for maybe 200 over that.

The first time I have to work on the bearings and hubs and they are standard parts readily available anywhere in America... Well, that extra two hundred is worth every cent.

Plus I got fourteen inch six ply tires in that deal.

It's only my opinion but all of these stamped C channel members just don't quite make it in the tongue area. This trailer is very similar to the 4x8 HF trailer in how it's made.
I stepped up and down on the tongue of mine and decided to beef up the tongue due to the flex I experienced. I was not worried it would collapse but metal fatigue was in the back of my mind. It is not difficult to make the alteration and can be done with a drill and a few good bolts.

Dalorin,
The shipping is free and I'm waiting for a local quote on a custom built frame.

Bob Henry, it seems like your saying it's doable with Reinforced tongue.

I used that trailer, because I owned it as a utility trailer first. From what I did with it as a utility trailer it will work fine as a teardrop trailer. But I wanted to add a tongue box, so I extended the tongue and added 2 angle braces to hold the box. I also added wheel spacers so I could move up to 15" tires. After all the modifications it is questionable as to whether it saves any money. But it does come with a title that can be a big advantage ,depending on your states laws.

This trailer was assembled and I picked it up at there store. They now have a bolt together trailer, and that is probably what you are considering. That will work the same way.

Another option is the Harbor Freight special trailer. It's a 5 x 8 collapsible trailer. Make sure you look into that one. I've never had one but many people on here have built with them and they run $279. All you have to do is bolt two pieces of wood or extra channel inside the joint where it's meant to fold.

I don't know where you're located but my local Harbor Freight is advertising this right now. I know they only sell this trailer at certain points of the year but I don't know if it's the same for all regions.

The main mistake that I've made so far with my build was not looking at the weight of the trailer. I seriously didn't even think about it. I can confidently tell you that no matter which bolt together you pick you're still going to be 200 lbs under what I'm stacking. :frightened:

Great pic woodcutter. My harbor freight website doesn't show anythings bigger than 4x8. Closest store is 2 hours away, but I'll give them a call.

I don't think HF carries the 5x8 any more, they did at one time. I have the 4x8 1720# frame and I am pleased with it. Cost including coupon and tax was like $300. They will ship to you. Be sure it is not the folding 4x8 trailer, as that has a much lower capacity, smaller axle, smaller tires.

WyoRon, did you get your trailer yet? I know it was a while ago but I am building mine on the Northern tools 5x8 trailer. I'm in Sheridan too so if you wanted to look at it, just let me know. I am hoping to get the walls up next week.

Re: Steve's reply above, that code just expired 7/4/15. New code is 238219 (good until 8/8/15)

New sale on the 5 x 8 Trailer on their website: $449.99. Apply the coupon code 238219 for a great deal of $399.99!!

I am looking at using the ironton 5 x 8 for my build. I would be interested to see details on the work you did to your trailer Woodbutcher.

Hey BLT. Click on Woodbutchers name and then send a private message. He may miss your request since he's not the original poster. I hope you connect with him. He is a good resource.

BTW, my brother's and my son's teardrops are on NT 5x8s. The kid's is the aluminum one but same design. Link in my signature.

If you look at my build thread, you can see how I strengthened tongue, moved axel, and changed it to underslung. I've used it for several years as a utility trailer, including moving 1000 miles.

If you need brakes, it will require changing axel, which I will do.

PS scroll to second page.

Any chance you can confirm the outside dimensions of the NT trailer? I'm considering using one, but I really need to keep the trailer 6ft wide or less, otherwise, we may not be able to get it in the yard through our narrow gate!

I just measured and it's a hair under 76" from fender to fender with the stock fenders installed. Looks like a bit wider than your needs.
