How this Year's spring camp gatherings went plus the dates for next year, from Linda:
I hope your spring camping is off to a great start! The Shasta Lake Gathering was terrific this year. We had about 14 people show up, and all agree that the upper loop at Antlers RV Park & Marina is definitely more desirable than where we’d been camping for the past, well, as long as I’ve been coming!
The road is level and chip sealed. The bathroom was in fine shape, and everything was in good working order. I love not having to pay for showers! And the camping site that I was in was huge!
When I arrived, a little after noon on that Thursday, I realized that my water spigot wasn’t working, and the signs for the newly painted bathroom had not been returned. So I called the front office, and they sent Justin right over. While he was there, Barbara & Edgar Morningstar arrived and decided to take the spot right next to mine, which hadn’t been cleared of leaves. Justin said to give him 15-20 minutes and he’d clear all the leaves away. He got the leaf blower out and piled them up, then got the front-loader and scooped them up. He also replaced the handle on my bear box, which was striped. Great work, Justin!
Thursday’s wine & cheese, the evening campfires, and the pot luck were all successful. Let’s keep the pot luck at lunch time, as long as the weather cooperates.
I know some of you are staying away because of the strict cancellation policy, and I get that. But, you could always decide at the last minute, when you’re sure you can make it, and the weather will be to your choosing. We are so early in the season that there is no chance of the place being full. Others are staying away because they are now charging each RV site directly for the electricity being used. I was in a tent site, so don’t have that complication. Others are not returning due to the rising cost per site. Well, the good news here is Antlers will allow up to 2 trailers per site. (As long as only one trailer is using the electricity.) So, grab a buddy, and share a site!
We did have one night of rain, but by the time I was packing up, everything was pretty dry. Other than that one rainy night, our weather was delightful! I visited a friend who lives in Dunsmuir, (about 30 minutes north) and he showed me a lovely waterfall an easy walk from the freeway. I’ll be glad you show you next year!
Next year’s SLG dates: April22-26 (That’s Thursday.-Mon.) This can be booked now.
After Antlers, some of us camped at Sycamore Ranch, (Mon.-Fri.) near Marysville. I think we initially had 4 campers. (Marna showed up for a few hours, but ended up leaving. More on that later.) The contingent who organizes the Redwood Rendezvous booked the same campground for Wed.-Mon., so we had a nice impromptu pot luck on Thursday. It was nice to see Deb & Randy, Cathy & Leo, Jon (without Romi), and Genie & Dan with their friend Deidra. There were lots of water fowl swimming, flying, and nesting along the river. Oh, and I saw the otters!
Sycamore Ranch is a lovely campground, well kept up, and I will stay there again next year. With that being said, as I was enjoying my first serene morning, the mowers showed up at 8 AM. I took a walk (the other way) and was able to continue to enjoy my morning. The second morning the crew with the chainsaws and trucks did their work, so it wasn’t quite as serene as I had hoped, but I managed to get away (the other direction) so as to not be too bothered by the noise. And this is why the campground looks so lovely in the spring.
One of the best aspects of Sycamore Ranch is the campground host, Jan. (Jan the Man!) He is delightful and helpful without being too nosy. Jan came by (hours before Marna showed up) and told us that the Vector Control Co. would be spraying for mosquitos that night between 8:45-9:15, and we should be sure to put away our food and dishes, and be prepared to stay inside for 5-15 minutes. I decided that would be a good evening for games in the tent! Unfortunately, they would be spraying again the following night, too. It was a bit disappointing to miss out on campfires 2 of my 4 nights there, but, on the positive side, there were no mosquitos the next day! Worth it? You decide. Both Marna and Jimmy decided they did not want to be exposed to whatever was being sprayed, so they left. And yes, they did both receive their refunds, with pleasant understanding.
Next year’s Sycamore Ranch dates: April 26-May 1 (That’s Mon.-Sat.) These reservations will be available after the first of the year, or perhaps Feb.
