Subject: Shasta Lake (mini) crawl

Happy New Year, my camping friends!

The dates for this years’ SLG are April 23 (Thursday) through 27 (Monday). A total of 4 nights if you come early and stay late.

Antlers RV Resort and Marina
20682 Antlers Rd

For those of you who have been to the Santa Lake Gathering in the past, I want to tell you about a couple of new ideas I want to try out this year. We’ll see how we like the changes, and can either keep them, or revert to the old ways.

First of all, I’d like to try camping in the upper loop this year. (Sites 74-116) The road surface is much better, and I understand that the bathroom is also nicer. (I haven’t seen inside it, as last year it was closed temporarily due to a water leak.) There are both electric/RV sites as well as tent/non-electric sites up there.

I booked site A 95 last year as I was checking out. Unfortunately, the Antlers Resort & RV Park has a very strict, and severe cancellation policy. Since it is never booked up on our weekend, many of us wait until we are sure we’re going to be able to attend before we book our site. There is no hurry to pre-book, unless you’re super picky about your site! If you tell them that you’re with the Teardrop Group, you will receive a 10% discount on your campsite (both RV & tent sites).

Last year, due to rain expected at our usual pot-luck time, we held it at lunch time instead of dinner time. I really liked this option for a couple of reasons: We were able to get our dishes washed easily before dark, and folks were able to hang out afterwards and visit without getting cold. Since most of us don’t do much sight-seeing or hiking during the day, the lunch time pot-luck (Saturday) option didn’t seem to inconvenience anyone. So let’s plan on that again this year!

Those who do arrive on Thursday can enjoy a wine & cheese tasting at my site.

Even though someone usually has a campfire each night, let’s plan on the official campfire on Friday night, again at my campsite.

In the past we have had an opportunity to check out each other’s campers & pick up on some great camping/trailer hacks. If there is interest (or new folks to the SLG) we can do that on Sunday after breakfast, before some have to pack up and head home.

A second change (or actually an addition) is to make this outing a mini-crawl! I’ve heard good things about Sycamore Ranch campground near Marysville, and last year I checked it out, and I agree - it looks nice. I have made reservations for Monday April 27-Friday April 30 (4 nights). I’ll be in site #3, which is in the south campground. If you want to join me, please let me know which site you get.

For those who already have reservations for Finnon Lake (May 4-9), we just have to find some place to camp for 3 nights between Sycamore Ranch and & Finnon Lake, unless you want to go home. I’m open for suggestions! If you aren’t already in on the Finnon Lake campout, sorry, it’s probably all booked. It’s a small, private campground, and fills fast.

Please let me know which site/s you book, as I like to keep track, and will send updates to those who I know preplanning to attend as the date nears.

Be prepared for any weather - several times its been raining or even hailing upon arrival, and other years it’s been in the 90’s! Let’s hope for something in between!

Please check with all of your teardrop friends - I’m sure that I don’t have everyone’s email address - and feel free to pass this info along. The more the merrier!
