The ROAM Camper Build

Thank you SLowcowboy!

The sink and stove fit inside a "kitchen stuff" plastic bin with some of the assorted kitchen utensils. I use a 5 gal. can to catch the grey water from the sink.

The kitchen just kinda popped in my head one day. I use to have the big Cabelas fold out kitchen, but this is very simple to set up take down.

Weight wise, she's pretty heavy. I have to go take it for state inspection soon, and my guess is it will top out near 2500-2700 lbs. I did put a 3"diameter, 3500 lb. brake axle on it, so shouldn't be any issues there. There are some extra amenities I carry, such as a 4' x 8' shower/potty tent, hot water heater, porta-potti, small fold up picnic tables and benches, 10' x 10' First Up gazebo with screen walls, a Honda ie2000 genny a 12v Engel ftidge, and probably more junk then I need. Depending on the facilities where I end up staying, I could eliminate some of that stuff.

I built it to support 4 adults camping, but for the most part it'll be me and the better half.

Take care,

Pat

Mate, That......is pretty damn impressive.
One question What did it weigh in the end
(Doh, Just read the weight in another post. Mind you looking at that tow vehicle it should not be an issue, we dont dont see them over here)

that is an incredible build. I have been trying to work up a hunting/backcounty rig for and I think you hit it on the head big time. I hope I can come up with something half that good to tow behind my liberty. I made a cheapy last year with a fold down kitchen on the side loved it. that is one of my favorite features.

Thank you folks for the kind words...

@ Magilla..Should be right around 2500# loaded, including water. I do spread some weight out to the 4Runner also, especially the fridge and firewood.

@ huntinhick....thanks, I'm hoping to be able to go a week without any other support if need be, although I 'm keeping my eye out for another Engel just for beverages... ;) My inspiration came from a guy who threw a build together on 1/10 of my budget. The light really clicked after thought" it's all prime real estate, so might as well use it. I also had two aluminum shelves bent up, that open up a bit of counter space

2....Prem...thanks so much!...much appreciated! I'm trying to catch up on some of the home projects that suffered last year because of the build, but I'm looking forward to finishing up the inside soon.

Here is a few shots of the first trip out this year....they accidently gave away my lakefront campsite I reserved, but we still had a great time.

That looks great, you gotta love the extra room the rooftop tent gives, here's my setup at Easter :) My son (in the foreground) slept up top with my two daughters in the annex and me and my wife in the TD. You cant see the 167W solar panel on the roof that kept us powered up for the week :)

I sure do like your trailer. Very cool concept, and looks great setup. The tent unit looks great on it all folded out like that.

Thanks Oregonguy...much appreciated! Now I just have to find time to wrap of the inside.....but at this point I just want to go and use it...

Just added sone Rotopax to the nose . They are the 2 gallon model with locking handles.

Here's the pix

A little pricey...but it should give me 5 full days generator usage...4-5 hours a day if need be.

Thank you, this is my second, so it was easier to see the shortcomings of the first. Obsessed? Addicted? I think I'm the posterboy....lol

I actually worked on it over the winter, and fine tuned it in March, and started in April

Not fully loaded...but my best guess is dressed out for bear...about 2600 #'s

Thank you again, I hope folks enjoy it and I also hope it inspires some newcomers to the lightweight, smaller trailer community. I was inspired by many Austrailian designs myself.

Hi Carl

The inside is about 50" wide and 96" long to where the nose box starts.

The inside has a built up platform that houses two 6v golf cart batteries and a 21 gallon water tank, including the pump. Over the platform are some 2 x 6's and 1/2 plywood that make up a nice size pull out bed. Once the wood is in place, there is a Coleman Queen inflatable mattress that fits perfect. Once the inside plan is finalized, the bed will actually fold up into a couch, as opposed to laying flat.

I'm still up in the air about the color, but I'm pretty sure I'll be using a 1/4 birch ply with a med brown stain. The walls will get insulated with foam, and thats here in the basement.....just waiting on time, because any vacation I can manage to squeeze out, I want to be using it!

Thanks for looking again, and I'll be sure to post the interior once it begins.

I'm headed out Sunday to Worlds End State Park in NorthCentral PA...if anybody wants to stop out for coffee, I'll be there til' Wends.

ROAM isnt a light weight at 2600 lbs; but that probably comes from the heavy duty ex-military trailer; my 6X10 CT overheight 6' interior wieights in at 1600 dry weight; but I was really trying to keep the weight down to save on tow capacity and fuel.

Have you completed the interior? Interior pics?

Cheers BC Dave

Howdy BC Dave,

Yea...the ROAM could use a diet, but I just can't part with any gear....lol

I had a great weekend get away planned until the plans got ruined by a nasty Nor'easter ...10" of snow, not at all funny

It weighed #1400 with just the finished box on the frame. It took it down to the local dump with a certified scale.

No interior fish as of yet, foams sitting in the basement, then I just have to figure what I want to use, and prefinish it.

Thanks for asking though!

"git dat foam in da wall and you could brave yer noresters ..." ;)

I've camped in the snow at 10F :) (with a propane heater)

ok another question. I see that you put a receiver hitch on the back, do you think it would be possible to use a basket with the 500lb rating and fill it up with out making it difficult to tow? I plan using mine as a hunting trailer so I need room to put game (I am optimistic) be it boned out in a cooler or two or just quartered in canvas bags. plus it would be nice to haul fire wood on the hitch on the way out instead of in the camper. I am liking you design more and more for my needs. With the roof top tent can you still use the roof rack to carry other stuff like kayaks?

thanks
carl
