tiny "BARNS" on wheels

Here was our set up when we went to Morris Il. 3 weeks ago.

Bobhenry, I was wondering, What was your final weight? Finished height? Could this be scaled down a bit more/lighter? And lastly(For now) What is this let in bracing you speak of? Thanks.

Sorry out of state all weekend and out of touch. Best guess trailer is 1200 lbs. It pulls easily with my 4 cylinder Suzuki Esteem. Inside height is 5'4" Barn is exactly 5 wide by 10 long. If you follow the thread all the way back you can see that every effort was made to cut the wood members to what I felt was minimal size without giving away the necessary strength. The let in bracing is a wood member glued and screwed in a grove plowed in the vertical members to tringulate for extra strength.

As to scaling down weight wise I don't think it would be possible to build much lighter without losing a great deal of strength. The roof is aluminum coil stock over 3/8 plywood then 2 layers of 3/4 foam in the cavaties and 1/4 luan interior liner over the bones. I lifted the entire roof framing onto the barn side walls by myself before adding the aluminum. It is designed as light as I dared. The framing 2x4 were cut down to 1 1/8" by 2 1/2 " actual size. If you are talking about scaling down size yes 4x8x4 tall would still give you the exact same barn look. Perhaps a mock equipment sidewall door for entry instead of the rear entry as I have.

If you are serious I will be happy to help anyway I can.

Hi Bob that's no prob about being away, I don't expect everyone's going to reply immediately. Some of these threads are old. When you say 5'4 your meaning to the peak eh? That is what size I'd perfer. However my cars only rated to tow 1000lbs. Is it possible to go 5 tall by 5 wide by 8 long? If I get a bigger TV I'm building this or a tumbleweed knock-off. Thanks for the info.

You are far ahead of us being rated at 1000 lbs. The Scion XB and the Suzuki Esteem are " NOT RATED TO TOW" had to have drawtite custom make both hitches ( takes about 4 weeks) . While I wouldn't take a cross country trip with them the Scion has towed Chubby my other tear 400 miles to my mothers and another 400 back home and he weighs even more than the barn. For local camping we will hook up to the cars but 3-4 day gatherings across the state we will now take my new dodge pickup simply because there is more cargo space.

As to towing we truely enjoy the roads less traveled and plan our route so we can enjoy the by ways of the state. We are just not in that big a hurry and will stop at will, be it garage sale, flea market ,or road side cafe. Keeping the speed down when towing will allow you to tow with a smaller vehicle. I truely hate our interstates and find the secondary roads much more relaxing. Build to your own tastes not someone elses **** I am the only damn fool with a barn but the 1st outing we had 42 visitors wanting a look it was crazy. So Build what you dream !

Since my "KITCHEN" is to become part of the barn I will continue the Wishbone wagon build as a portion of my barn thread.

Here was the concept drawing ..............[

And here we go

Looks like a fun and less-conventional build, thoroughly thought out, a huge kitchen for serious cooking on a truly tiny trailer. One thought from me? The light on the galley might be better closer to the hinge, or better yet, under that clever spice rack, so the cook won't always be blocking his/her own light and casting a shadow on the counter top, come dark.

The second actual picture is where it landed , dead center above the counter. It was a little jelly jar porch light I bought at a yard sale for $2.00
I mounted a wall shelf and then the light. It was just after I took the pictures so I missed that one. Intend to put a center divider in the storage area running longways and will install a small light in each of the compartments to find things in the dark.

Only got in a couple hours this weekend , too much going on.

I am dividing the storage area of the chuck wagon into 4 lockers approx 18" deep by 18" tall by 40" wide

I decided on some real cheap (75 cents) ac lighting for the lockers here is my cheesey cheap lighting kit

There will be eight lights all together since each of the 4 locker will have different items each side.

Here it is installed

This weekend has not been kind to a builder.

Thursday Family commitments

Friday scouted Spring Mill ( fun but not real productive).

Saturday got a 3 hour repreve from yet another family dinner , blast off was moved from 12 to 3 pm so I could sneak in a couple hours to work on the electrical on the CHUCK WAGON.

Here is a close up

The switch panel is a coleman stainless steel smoker box. Designed to be filled with damp wood chips and tossed on the grill to help smoke what your cooking.

However..... It made a dandy mini switch box !

The 4 switches are for the 4 cargo storage lockers in the front

last one is a bit fuzzy sorry !

All the top storage dividers are in and yes the lights do work.

Just one more good day please :worship:

Lookin good Bob. If you do decide to run it down to Spring Mill and don't want to tow it let me know I have my doubles. Looks to me like your set up will be a bit easier.

It will be less stressful than a trip to Chicago for sure! And a lot shorter of a rig to boot 8)

Holy Stromboli MY LUNCH IS HERE !
Looks like the refrigeration is a step above an ice filled cooler though.

Maybe I'm going blind in my old age, but I can't figure out where the entry door on the barn is.

The barn is in the rear on the right

I don't sleep in the chuck wagon

follow the steps

Full size bed behind the 1/2 galley wall ( It converts to a sofa in about 45 seconds)

Rainy and drizzle all day sunday so I worked on electrical things.

I converted 2 inexpensive kerosene lantern into 120 volt lights.

The chuck wagon will have 2 bat wing removable tables
( I reused the cargo door cutouts 18 x 36 )
to extend the prep and cleanup area.
These tables will store in the under the deck storage area.

In order to have some source of task lighting after dark
I decided a mount for a removable lantern hook and
a plug in will be installed on each side. The lantern hook
and lantern will be installed near the table after arrival.

I documented the conversion in the electrical section. Sorry about the fuzzy pictures my cheap camera does not like close ups.

Can not believe I spent almost 9 hours this weekend
getting the electrical finished on the chuck wagon . http://tnttt.com/album_ ... c_id=58533
I thought it would be a 2 - 3 hour job.

I now have 2 lights in each one of the 4 storage
lockers and have electrics stubbed outboard above
the bat wing tables. The task light in the rear galley
works on a switch and the 2 outlets are hot.

I installed the lower center wall between the right
and left storage locker. We did a little measuring
and a pony keg just might be an option in 1 locker.

CAN YOU SAY PARTY CENTRAL ..... 8)

Could anyone help me find the clip on clip off
batwing table hardware. I looked in the hardware
section of the hardware store and zero ideas.

I know I have seen the post before .....................

Thanks Bob
