Tire/tube recommendations ?

Live in SW N.M., wanting to get back on 2 wheels BUT ... we've a lot of
Goatheads https://www.google.com/search?q=Goathea ... 67&bih=584
just awaitin' to stick themselves into tires and let all my air out. What
do y'all recommend to keep the tires full of air and rolling?

I've never had any problems with goat heads except for bicycle tires and for that we have some special tire liners. Like these but a different brand name

There are tires that have tuff puncture resistant layers built into them.. like Specialized Armadillos for one. A few years ago.. they did not have the best ride quality.. the newer ones are better. Many mountain bikers use tubeless set ups. [With tubeless set ups there is a sealant used in the tire.. It immediately seats any holes the goat heads make.

Most will be a 50/50 split, dirt and some gravel roads some pavement.
A lot of the locals tend to throw their empty bottles (all types), onto
the shoulders which are very generous 15' to 20' along the chili and
cotton fields.

Shoulda known I'd find you up here as well. One of my neighbors had a tire on
his pick-up go soft due to a goat head ... and it was a fairly new tire to boot.
He'd run across about a 50' patch of them on his way to his gold claim last autumn.
A bike shop in Las Cruces gives this recommendation;

and a brother in Fl. (used to live in Winter Park, Co. for 20 years), recommended;

So, perhaps if I go "Over the Top", I could mix the tires my brother recommends
with the rest of the "stuff" from the bike shop and I should be able to just loose
my wind pedaling instead of flat tire fixin' ...

I also need to raise the handle bars up some, converting a Mtn. Bike to a hybrid
should be easier on the back and create a larger target for the 4-wheelers to aim at.

Part of the reason for my question around tire size…[and I guess tread needed]

I was thinking about the new tubeless set up.. although if you are using an older mountain bike.. protective tires and tubes with a sealant might be your best option.
but this is what the Stans tubeless set up does.

Hadn't considered the tubeless route, ... interesting, will give it some thought.
I'll post what I decide when I get done processin'' the information and my feelings
about to go 'without' something that, for bikes, seems like ya don't want to leave
home without at least a pair and a spare...

For the best tubeless set ups.. the tire and rim have to be tubeless compatible. Some people have been successful in making things work with other set ups… gorilla tape.. foam and tape. Sometimes these alternatives work ok.. others not.
The set ups work to seal punctures, but I have cut tires.. a big slice from a big piece of glass. That did result in a flat.

Like the Schwalbe recommendation above, I've found marathon or expedition tyres to be the ultimate choice for puncture resistance - I was tempted to write puncture prevention, but that's bad karma.

Howdy All;

Well, ... decided. I've ordered a pair of the Schwalbe Tires the Marathon Plus Tour 404's
also getting a pair of their tubes as well. My brother in Fl. sez he's doing about 400 mi/mo.
and averages about 8,000 per pair. He's working on his third pair now.

I'll post some more later, after I've put some miles on them and run through some Goat heads.
