Trailer Saunas

Last week we visited a friend who lives in Phippsburg Maine. Outside temp was a chilly 35 degrees. She suggested we try out these saunas built on/into horse trailers (so they’re portable, towable and can be driven to various locations). The sauna we rented was located steps from Popham Beach, a very frigid (42degrees) waterway leading into the mighty Atlantic. You’d go in the sauna, get heated up and sweaty and then, with mighty gusto, exit the sauna….run fifty yards across the sand and dive into that water. Talk about pleasure / pain. We’d do this half a dozen times, each time staying in the water a bit more time as your body got used to this. I’m investigating this setup for my next build. 😎

If you’re thinking about building it, check the insulation and stove setup before anything else. The rental ones get hot stupid fast, but homemade versions sometimes struggle if the airflow’s wrong. Also… make sure whoever runs into the ocean isn’t carrying sand back into the sauna. Learned that one the hard way.
