Traveling With Pets

This is aimed more at cats. But maybe it can apply to dogs as well.
Is there a certain harness you use? Do you let ur cat out on a lead? How did you train the cat?
Any other issues to address with a cat?

I only ask because last time we were out of town it took a toll on him. Even tho the neighbor came by and spent time with him and fed him. His litter box was nothing but diarrhea. No solid poo whatsoever. I felt terrible! He is also 13. So he needs regular blood pressure meds as well.

We had an elderly cat who ended up liking her trips with us in the teardrop. She would sleep in the back seat of the truck during the day when we were traveling, and in the bed in the teardrop if we were in camp and going off exploring. At night she sort of slept with us, with plenty of crawling on top of us, which didn't help our sleep. We took a cloth "cave" along that she would use traveling or at home, so she felt comfortable.

We would set up her litter in the truck and I would take her out there and leave her to do her business for a half hour or so after it got dark. She figured out the schedule pretty quickly.

Did ur cat explore outside? Our cat cries if he doesnt have access to the outside. He was a stray that showed up and never left. Hes THE most affectionate cat I have ever had. So lovey dovey. He has a doggy door he and the dog use at home. When we have the travel trailer parked at home, its his little apartment. I know where to look for him! Lol but there's plenty of room for a litter box under the bed, with ventilation. I have a metal kennel for travel in the truck. A tracking device for the collar. I originally got it for the dog, but shes so good about staying close. Im worried about outside time with a harness and how the cats going to handle driving. He hates driving to the vet. Poor cat. I trained my last cat to a harness and walking outside with me.
Short walks at first and plenty of treats. It was slow walking and
plenty of wandering around. I assume curiosity on her part.

I found it was no where near like walking a dog.

Our cats are fulltime indoor cats. We don't take them camping, we use to board them but found it better and cheaper to just get a double bowl automatic feeder. They have a continuous flow water fountain for water.

They always travel with us to our cabin and they ride in crates taking turns for who rides on top of the stack. We clean and fill litter boxes when we leave from the last trip so it's ready for them on arrival. We use to let them wonder in the yard at the cabin but one got treed by some hawks once and another got bit/stung by something in a wood pile - outdoor time was over. At some point we used a leash but one day our Manx freaked out and went tazz - that ended. Now they go out one at a time with Mrs philpom but she holds them, they can enjoy the outdoors until they want down, that's a sign to go back in.

They travel well and taking them camping wouldn't be an issue except the potty needs - litter boxes are bad enough in general, not putting one in the camper though.

Ours didn't much. She didn't want to, although Shelly took her on a hike in a backpack one time, and we had her outside with us sitting in our folding chairs while we cooked dinner a few times. She'd prefer to stay in the teardrop.

She could tell when we were taking her to the vet, and when we were planning a trip, probably because we'd be packing the day before. We didn't take her to a weekend dollhouse show (where Shelly had a booth--her retirement business), one time, and the cat thought she was going to go with us. Rather trumatic when we got back. Broke our hearts and we decided to take her with us from then on.
