I have been practicing every week since we purchased (around 12/5) our waffle iron. I have finally perfected mine without a mix. I use buttermilk, oatmeal, a mixture white & whole wheat flour, toasted wheat germ, brown sugar, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, eggs, and canola oil. But I have an electric stove in the house. As soon as the weather warms up, so we can turn the trailer around in the garage. I will try using the gas burner. A whole new learning curve. The waffles are tasty.

I mixed up some batter this evening from the recipe on the bisquick box. I was frustrated. My cast iron is maybe not seasoned properly or I did not allow it to get hot enough before I poured on the batter but the result was a waffle stuck to both sides of the iron and torn apart in the middle, this over a gas stove flame medium high.

I made a few good ones right after I bought it last fall but can't recall what I did.

I had the same thing happen with my first batch of waffles with the sticking issue. I was frustrated as well. So the next time after consulting with Tom. I reseasoned the iron. Then really greased up the hot iron with shortening before adding the batter. And it worked!! Since then I just scrub the iron with a stiff vegetable brush and grease it up with shortening or spray on the Pam.

Thanks for the tip. I seasoned it last fall on the grill. Maybe I need to go the shortening route instead of using vegitable oil. After reading around a bit I saw a recipe that called for cooking a few strips of bacon on the iron prior to adding the batter which would grease it up real good.

I had trouble with the waffels sticking at first. I think I had too much heat. If I turn the heat down and cook them for about 3 minutes they turn out just fine. I also use cooking spray before the first one each time I use it.

For those interested, a few new activities may be available at "Cooler Near The Lake".
The short list is ice skating, x country skiing, ice climbing, igloo making and snow shoeing.
I also checked and site #20 is guaranteed to be cleared out by the 17th of August.

Ahh, but the BIG question is....how many people can even GET to their teardrop? We just got another 14" of snow on top of what we already had and the snow on my front lawn is now taller than me (alright, so I'm only 5' tall, but still...). Well, what's winter in the north country without snow? Pretty boring!

Of course, with the igloo making activity, we can be creative and make them in the shape of a teardrop.

I can get to my TD and I check weekly the weekend temps around the area in the hopes a low of 20 and high in the upper 30 will show up so I can get out of town. The sub zero temps are what kill me. -5 tonight and -12 tomorrow night! But this weekend looks a little warmer.

I am with Cary enough is enough, I am ready for spring!!

But until then I will just keep practicing on the waffle iron, so Jack has the carbs to keep blowing snow. That way we will be is shape for cleaning the snow off of site #20 before the 17th of August.

At least here the sun is shining today, but it is still too cold.

Due to the "great hard drive crash of '07", I lost every link I had a year ago. Hello all! Glad that I have just relocated my friends from last years Cooler by the Lake. And to see another event planned. Let me huddle up with the master scheduler and see if we can join again this year.

I'll second that one! We don't have a heated space to work on ours so it's sat there in pieces in the garage(s) all winter.

We moved a few weeks back so it saw some daylight for about 30 minutes but it was all tore down like a flatpak container.

We now have access to a huge metal building (barn) down near Morris, IL. So we'll probably move it down there in a few weeks and begin working again. I'm hoping to have it dried in well enough to use for CNTL II.

So I missed the post and can't find it - is the potluck a dinner or a breakfast? And which day? I saw the original was Saturday night but there's breakfast talk going on. I R cornfused :?

I think the pot luck should be Saturday night. The talk about breakfast is so far just talk. I think it would be fun to have a waffle breakfast on Saturday morning. We have the full use of the shelter beginning at 8AM. We would need to figure out how to arrange that. How many have waffle irons and how many would be interested in participating? One kind of mix or several favorite recipes? $1 each for breakfast or $5 each site to cover the cost of the shelter with any extra going to the breakfast? Their was some talk on the forum about coffee, is anyone interested in exploring how many ways their are to make coffee?
A lot of questions, lets give people a week or so to read this and decide what we want to do.

We have a waffle iron. We like the idea of different recipes.

But what about cooking(baking) the waffles. Would do that at our site? Or the shelter? How to keep waffles warm and without them becoming soggy?

Our camping coffee has been boil water and add Taster's Choice. Not exactly gourmet!
