Scott, Have to get to Walmart to get my fishing license so I can watch the other people catch all the fish.
The canoe should be interesting when fishing and steering are done at the same time. I'm not familiar with Sugar Creek, but any current at all would make it intere  sting.

Turkey Run Update:

Right now ,we have 15 campers who have registered. This is great!!

As the Winter ebbs and Spring comes along, we should get a few more campers for the gathering.

I still haven't heard from Jim Linder (Indianapolis) who is a pleasure to have at a gathering. (you'll see)

Jim is one of those "mythical characters" that makes the party a lot of fun.

The other myth, that you will hear is about my wife. She really does exist, but no one (in the group) has ever met her. She is a mythical character too. Due to the teaching schedule she never makes it to the Spring or Fall outings. (Which is when our normal group meets)

I get teased a lot about it, but I promise, one of these days she'll come along. :applause:

The wife and I are kayakers. Will probably bring the boats with us. But we just might go canoeing as well.

My wife's not a big camper but I sweet talked her into coming on the maiden voyage of the Tear. I think she's starting to look forward to the get away even if it is to the woods

I'm not a fisher so I'll just stick to the canoes and the wonderful trails.

Hey Scott, Ive looked up the local canoe liveries. The one that looks the best to me is Turkey run canoe trips. They have a wide variety of trip packages to choose from. With rates this affordable I won't even bother with bringing my own canoe as it will cost at least that much in wind drag on top of my jeep just to get it there!
Here's the link..http://www.turkeyruncanoetrips.com/

Mark that's the same one I was looking at, not sure which trip I'll take yet
It will be the 11 or 15 mile. The 4 would just be way to short

A description from the internet...

Sugar Creek is not Indiana's fastest nor is it our most challenging canoe water, but it is generally conceded to be the most beautiful stream in the State. It runs either through or along a Girl Scout Camp, Pine Hills Nature Preserve, Shades State Park, Turkey Run State Park and Allee Memorial Forest. Mississippian and Pennsylvanian sedimentary rocks have been exposed by the erosive action of the stream. An added attraction in the area is the many covered bridges over Sugar Creek and other streams in the area.

The dominant native vegetation along the stream is an upland beech-maple association. In places, unique relic species such as hemlock and white pine occur. These trees have a normal range 150 or more miles to the north but may be found on northwestern facing cliffs. The river generally ranges from 2-4 feet deep with a bottom of rubble or sand. The stream runs clear except after rain when it tends to become muddy. Fishing is generally good in the stream; game fish species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, panfish and catfish. Look for most fish to be in the pools lying just below rapids.

Sugar Creek is usually hospitable to its visitors, displaying a series of riffles, pools and gentle wide runs. During flood stage, however, the character changes drastically and the river becomes dangerous for all but the experienced whitewater canoeist. If you think the water may be high, contact the property manager at Shades State Park to check on water levels and conditions before you leave.

Sugar creek is a grand place to enjoy!

Rob

Canoe Trips @ Turkey Run

Postby Ramblerfan » Fri Jan 19, 2007 5:24 pm

Hi all, we only live about 20 miles north of Turkey Run in Fountain County and have been there many times over the years. Sugar Valley canoe rentals is right outside the park (campground walking distance) and offers nice Old Town fiberglass canoes. These are really nice when the water is at all low. They are not noisy and don't take as much water to float. Turkey Run Canoe Rentals is a short ( about 2 miles ) drive North on US 41 and use aluminum canoes. The service is good at both places, but for the money, we much prefer Sugar Valley. We hope you enjoy your visit to our neck of the woods!!! 8)

Hello Ramberfan, is there a web site for the Sugar Valley rentals?

Sugar valley canoe trips, Click here

The kayaks they rent are open body, unlike most everyone's idea of a kayak.
They are very comfortable, with a recess molded in for your back and backside.
Canoes are nice, but the kayaks are fun!
(tubes aren't bad either)

Love the thought of the kayak. I've been whitewater rafting in a one person blow up kayak. Nothing more fun but seeing as how the wife and I don't get away often together I think I'll stick with the 2 person canoe. You know romantic

Nice looking teardrop. Did you build it yourself? Definitely looks like a professional job.

Thanks ! It is a professional job from So Cal Tear Drops. The 5x9 model.

It's pretty stripped down; I was using it a lot to drag 300 lbs of "kids group" climbing gear (+ my camping stuff) behind a 4 cylinder tow vehicle and tried to keep the weight down. Group climbing days are behind me now so I'm hoping to start dressing up the interior soon . . .

I was thinking about doing a canoe trip as well . . . I have access to a 12 footer; just have to figure out if it possible to get it up on the rack.

Also, are there any dog owners bringing Rex or Fido ? Good idea or bad idea ??

Hi Mike,

In the past, no one has brought their dog(s).

I don't think anyone would object...as long as you were in COMPLETE CONTROL 100% of the time. :worship:

We all like pets, but I think no one would appreciate a dog running loose, barking, or otherwise disturbing the experience we come for.
