Absolutely welcome. We never turn anyone away, especially in winter.

Why don't we just make it Turkey Run in January? I know Bob wouldn't care?!

I know a couple others that will be happy with that too.....

Billy K (Kokomo)was wanting to join us job schedule permitting...

And Scuba (NORTH INDY)was planning on joining us also

We might even get Rob to hop over the stateline and at least come visit if not stay.

Turkey Run is fine with me. I'd love to meet as many of you guys and gals as I can, and having it more in the Central Indiana area should help bring more people there.

All of the Shivarees have been "Weather Permitting" That means if you arn't comfortable with the conditions think it thru and just be safe. I will give my cell number 765-538-2580 and I am sure Dan and a couple others will as well. If you have a last minute change of heart just let us know to relieve us from worrying about you and yours.

This weekend is immediatly after the full moon (the 8th I think) Weather around the full moon is usually a bit more calm but it IS Indiana. We have never had to cancel a winter get together but we did have to change parks at the last minute one year so keeping the lines of communication open is important.

We have always warned the park we were coming and they have plowed pads as needed and had things ready for us. I think they are happy to just have some visitors!

It appears I am flying solo so I will be bringing Rip Van Winkle to his very 1st gathering....

I am in a position that I can bring a full pickup load of small pine cutoff from work for a great bonfire. :campfire:

So let's go Campin'

Scot:

As hilly as it is around Turkey Run, there HAS to be some good sledding hills!!! That area is as hilly as Brown Country, in places.

Well lets make it official...Turkey Run State Park, January 13th and 14th. Weather permitting of course. I have got 2- 10x10 canopies with sides that we can put together (if Scuba can't make it) and run a heater if needed as we have done before. As Pat mentioned the eagles will be nesting and may be viewable. Better get those Apple Pie recipes out.

There is an electrical power plant near Cayuga off of SR 63, ironically named "Cayuga Power Plant". Since it discharges warm water, the Bald Eagles nest around there because they can fish all winter in the warm water. There is a weekend in early February where there is an open house with wagon rides back to the private lake to view the Bald Eagles.

I've also see the Bald Eagles nesting on SR 234 just east of SR 63. You can see them fishing from a boat launch next to a bridge on the Wabash River.

Neat sight if you can the Bald Eagle actually catch a fish.

Count us in! Any thoughts on which part of the park? I know typically they close down the section from 184 on up, which leaves us with one area with a pit toilet, between sites 68 & 69. Congregate up around that area?

Might want to get some trees between us and the prevailing winds just in case.

I have never camped in Turkey run so maybe someone has a good idea OR we can get the satellite "look see" at the campgrounds and get us in the trees and out of the wind a bit.

I am probably as close as anyone so I will try and get down there in the next couple weeks and look around. I will talk with the staff at that time and forwarn them of our coming.

Point of clarification are we really trying for Friday and Sat night ???
or just Sat / Sunday.

Here is the map of the Turkey Run Campgrounds.

Image

For those who have never been there , there is a main entrance and about 1/2 mile on down there is a seperate entrance for the campground. From S.R.47 you will see a large parking lot ,the camp store ,( which is closed for the season ) and the gate house (which will be unmanned) . Vickie and I visited the park Saturday. We looked closely at the sites and the #50 - #70 sites were literally underwater. Unfortunatly these are the ones near the pit toilet. These areas are out in the direct wind and that might be a real problem without a winddreak. I liked the little cul de sac sites 30 - 36 ( there are actually about 12 sites in this area these are the mystery overflow sites the park keeps secret ) Yes I counted meter heads . These sites were still within walking distance of the P.T. and were high and dry and well protected from the wind on all sides but the south.

Similarly the larger cul de sac was the same. #157 thru #174

There are 12 - 15 sites at the very front ( # 189 to 200) that have a very convenient pit toilet but you may feel as if you are in the highway when large trucks go by as you are just a rock toss from S.R. 47

We spoke with the ranger who is the head of security and plowing if needed will not be a problem. He suggested the first one in just ask for assistance if needed at the MAIN gate. He also volunteered that the camping fee is $11.22 per night. From past experience at other parks it will be a good idea for you to have exact cash if possible.

I have some pictures to post and will try and get them on later today!
