Black Flies

We were in the Adirondacks two years ago in mid June. Spent a weekend at Sagamore while attending the no-octane regatta in Blue Mt. Lake. The black flies were thick at Sagamore, but there were none at Blue Mt. We camped at Lake Durant the following week with no black flies - just mosquitos and no-see-ums.

There is a running stream at Sagamore which I have read is where black flies breed. Found two good references:

http://res2.agr.gc.ca/ecorc/diptera/bf11-dp11_e.htm

Anyway, we have our bugshirts and are ready. Besides, they seem to prefer Leslie over me by at least 10 to 1. I don't remember that much running water around Fish Creek.

We are going to Chain O'Lakes state park in Indiana for M-Day weekend. We recently found it and like it as it seems like a 1 x 4 mile patch of Adirondacks in Northern Indiana.

Looking forward to meeting everyone in three weeks.

Alan: I have worked, fished, hiked, and camped in and around the Adirondacks all my life....We have found that black flys and mosquites love anything that you use that is sented....Hair spray, sented soaps, clothes dryed with dryer sheets, cologne, perfume, and clothes washed in a sented soap...The web sites that you have were great...It had a lot of great things....

I haven't been to Fish Creek quite this early, but by june 16th hopefully the pests will be on their last wings.

We've only used our nets once, and that was last year on May 13th here in Ontario. I still remember how cute Kate looked covered completely and her 'Mrs Roboto' look...

Hi All,

OK ,with 11 days to go we have a couple of questions. Are we having any kind of get together dinner? I need to know so I can pack the things I need to make our contribution. Is there a gate on the park entrance ? I have a new job,and my departments budget figures are due Monday the 20th. This means we have to depart very early Sunday morning,so that I have time Sunday to prepare. If the gate is closed Saturday night, and will not be open until later Sunday morning,we may have to depart Saturday night. Any info would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks, pateardropper

Hi Pateardropper, I think there will be a get together meal of some kind, but hav'nt heard anything more.
As far as the gate is concerned, I don't think it will be a problem, but we have only been there once and cannot say for sure, maybe Dave will answer this with more certainty.
Can't wait to meet you all...

Norm

Usually, later arrivals just go the the site you have reserved, set up, then go to the check in booth in the morning. That's been our experience.

PA,

No problem coming or going. The gate is always open. If your leaving early Sun morning there is no issue. No checkout procedure either. Just have to be off your site by 11am the day you are leaving.

A get together dinner makes the most sense on Sat night. We thought a simple pot luck would do fine. Lets start a new thread and everyone can post what they wish to bring. See here... http://tnttt.com/viewto ... 6151#36151

We are eager and ready. Nice thing about the teardrop is that it is already packed.

We plan to leave at noon Wednesday and camp in (probably) the Finger Lakes area Wednesday evening. Keuka Lake is our usual stopover - it had good sites for tents, but I think they will work fine for trailers. We should arrive at Fish Creek sometime Thursday afternoon or early evening. We might stop and make a quick paddle at Cranberry Lake.

We also made a reservation at Golden Beach Campground (Site 156) on Raquette Lake for Tuesday the 21st through the following Sunday. We usually spend some time in different regions of the Adirondacks, since it is a fair drive for us from Ohio. We'll then pick a campground where we haven't camped before and spend two or three nights before we to to Connecticut to visit Leslie's mother for the weekend of the 4th.

We'll see everyone next week!

Yup only a week to go! If weather is good, we might go down a day early (ie Wed), otherwise we'll be there by noon Thurs I suspect.

I hope your taking photos alone the way Alan. Would be great to see what Golden Beach is like for some future trip. We'll be at Moffitt Beach in August on another trip down that way.

:( I have had to cancel my trip. I thought I could take off early friday and take off Monday. Now conflicts at work even prevent this. Frustrating but can't be helped. Hope everyone has a good time. Maybe I can make it next year. regards, Gail

Finally getting around to updating my Fish Creek Pond photo album. If you're interested in checking our Fish Creek Pond in a bit more detail, visit the photo page on the Spring Tearup site at http://campadk.com/pjsnoozer/springtear ... hotos.html . There are some 250+ photos now available.

As well I have updated the list of area activities going on during the TearUp. Of particular interest to some would be the nature programs held at the Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths (20 minutes north, or less) and a visit to the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain (60 Min south). If you visit the ADK Museum, you'll also be able to check out the No-Octane Regatta and Wooden Boat Expo at the same time which is held at the town beach just down the hill.

Of course no visit to this part of the woods is complete without stopping in Lake Placid!

For more on these activities and events see http://campadk.com/pjsnoozer/springtear ... ities.html

Cheers
