Dave, ALM does not have this issue listed on their site. Perhaps I missed it?? Any more details on the coverage? I can't wait to order a copy. Thanks!

TearUp Updates

Postby campadk » Tue Apr 20, 2010 6:03 pm

We'll a few more sign ups lately, especially since the ADK Life article hit the stands. We now have 48 sites booked (89 campers). There are 10 sites available, so if you still haven't book, you better get a move on! Prime oh site 210, 211 in the middle of the group are available, otherwise you'll have to pick one of the sites in the 260's.

Kates going to be providing me with some details for the Saturday Night Wine and Booze party... I mean Wine and Win party... Wine and Prizes?

As I recall last year, the Wine and Cheese party was mainly Wine and Prizes... didn't notice any cheese actually! I do remember taking a LOT of bottles to the recycling center the next day! Anyways I'll have something to post shortly, so do check back here often.

Newbies!

Postby deceiver » Tue Apr 20, 2010 8:36 pm

Joyce and I are from Maine and have booked 219 for three days. We're currently refurbishing a Little Guy Sport. It'll be finished for the trip but it's going to be a maiden voyage for us. We're planning a cross country in the fall so we'll need this outing to work out. If you see two pathetic looking newbies trying to put up a canopy around a heavily modified tear, that's us!

Really looking forward to meeting everyone.

Tearup 2010 Wine and Cheese

Postby campadk » Tue Apr 20, 2010 8:59 pm

Wine and Cheese Night

Start: 6:00 p.m.

Where: Dave and Kate's Campsite (site 241, look for our shiny Airstream)

What to Bring: Wine and cheese or appetizer (enough for yourselves but
we will pool the food)

Group Photo: between 6:30 - 7:00

Draw for Prizes: If you wish to donate a prize this year please bring
it the day before or in the morning of the Wine and Cheese. Last year
with the rain and chaos of the steal a gift Kate wasn't able to get
names from those who donated prizes and we would like to name those
people to thank them for their generosity.

Steal a Gift: New Rules and Reminders of How to Play

To play you must bring a wrapped gift to the Wine and Cheese gathering.
Gifts should be less than $10; or regift from something around your
house (optional camping theme!); or even better something hand made!
Your steal a gift should be wrapped and tagged with your campsite #.
Please tie the tag on so it can be removed. This is your ticket for
the game. Once the tag is removed the gift is anonymous.

Reminder of Rules (with a slight change):
Kate will draw a campsite number. The first person must chose a prize
but cannot open it.This gift remains unopened throughout the game -
It's the "mystery gift".

The next person has a choice of A) chose a gift from the pile and open
it; or B) chose a gift from the pile and exchange it with player #1.
Player #1 will open the exchanged gift but Player #2 cannot open the
"mystery gift" which can be stolen throughout the game.

Player #3 can chose A) a gift from the pile and open it; or B) a gift
from pile and exchange it for one of the gifts in play.

This goes on until all gifts in the pile are in play. The final move
is for Player #1 who never got to steal. This is now their choice to
either exchange what they have with any other gift including the
unopened gift if it has been stolen from them. Once Player #1 has made
their choice the "mystery" gift can be opened.

Yes, I'm going to talk to Becky and Ed and will post info shortly. Last year many people didn't know about it, or were late getting stuff over to the truck so we'll have to ensure everyone knows whats happening.

biobricks and campwood for fires

Postby deceiver » Sat Apr 24, 2010 11:24 pm

So, I have a question. Two actually. 44 states prohibit the transport of firewood across state lines because of disease possibilities. I see pictures of people burning a lot of wood in the picts. Is it really not a big issue here?

Secondly. Has anyone used biobricks in the open campfires. I know they work good in a wood stove but wondered about their longevity in a campfire.

Thanks.

Dan- firewood is a very BIG issue in NY! The following is quoted from the NYS DEC website:

Firewood and Invasive Insects
Don't Move Firewood - You Could be Killing Our Trees!
FIREWOOD ALERT - "DON'T MOVE FIREWOOD"

A REGULATION is in effect that prohibits the import of firewood into New York unless it has been heat treated to kill pests. The regulation also limits the transportation of untreated firewood to less than 50 miles from its source. See Frequently Asked Questions.

By transporting firewood, you could be spreading diseases and invasive insects that can quickly kill large numbers of trees. Help STOP THE SPREAD and obey the Firewood Regulation:

•It is best to leave all firewood at home - please do not bring it to campgrounds or parks.
•Get your firewood at the campground or from a local vendor - ask for a receipt or label that has the firewood's local source.
•If you choose to transport firewood within New York State:
â—¦It must have a receipt or label that has the firewood's source and it must remain within 50 miles of that source.
â—¦For firewood not purchased (i.e. cut from your own property) you must have a Self-Issued Certificate of Source (PDF, 100 kB), and it must be sourced within 50 miles of your destination.
â—¦Only firewood labeled as meeting New York's heat treatment standards to kill pests (kiln-dried) may be transported into the state and further than 50 miles from the firewood's source. Acceptable firewood heat treatment must raise the core temperature of the firewood to 71 degrees C, or 160 degrees F, and hold it there for at least 75 minutes. Most "kiln-drying" processes that reduce the moisture content to less than 18% achieve this sterilization standard.
â—¦For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions for Firewood Regulation.

Hope this answers your question. As for the bio-bricks, don't know anything about those.

The biobricks are safe as they are pressed wood dust. They are the same material as is used in wood pellets for pellet stoves which are all the rage here in Maine. But they are in the form of a brick. Not too expensive and they stack nicely. Good alternative to wood. My tear is the little guy sport with the ATV rack on the front so I can haul some fire stuff If I wanted to.
Thanks for the response.

Also, wasn't there a guy that went around the campground selling firewood from his truck? There are stands on the road side that sell it also.

The guy near Tupper lake has good fire wood for a decent price.

He has a huge lot of wood and it's hard to miss him.

He's on the left side of the road at the base of the "hill" going (west) toward Tupper Lake on Rt#3.

Boating registration question:

Do kayaks (16 and 17 feet) need to be registered or numbered in New York? From what others have told us, we don't think so.

We are currently building two wooden kayaks (completion hopefully a week before the Tearup) and do not have time before the Tearup to go through the Ohio process - inspection, sending to Columbus for Hull ID plate, and then finally registering & applying numbers and stickers.

From a net search this morning, I think that Ohio is the only state in the northeast from IN and MI to ME and down to NJ, MD, and WV that requires kayaks and canoes to be registered and numbered. All our other canoes and kayaks are registered/numbered and many folks comment on this in our travels.

I hope I havent given NY an idea for revenue enhancement. Actually, its not the money - fairly trivial - Just dont want to put numbers on our hopefully nice looking wooden boats. I have actually thought though that they might serve as a theft deterrent!

As far as I know Alan, only motorized boats need to be registered in NYS
