Carla and I are heading from the North Carolina mountains to Mystic, CT for the weekend July 15-17 2005. This is the TearJerkers Annual Event at The Mystic Seaport Campground.

We will be going to Montpelier, VT on Sunday, then on to Lake George, NY on Monday. We will be at Niagra Falls from Tuesday thru Thursday. And ending the week in Erie, PA on Friday July 22nd.

If you have been to any campgrounds or State Parks in these areas, which ones would you suggest  ?

Thanks,

Ross

How about Fish Creek Ponds Ross (about 1.5 hours west of Lake George) off of Upper Saranac Lake. Can't beat it for lake side camping. Reserve early though. (lots of photos on my site).

Haven't been to any of the state parks near Lake George, although we are planning a 9 day trip, probably around the end of July. Maybe we'll meet up! We plan on staying at one of the state park near Lake George.

We've stayed at the Shalamar Lake Campground between Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake (Ontario side). Nothing too fancy but great location for visiting the wineries, biking and Niagara on the Lake. If you more into visiting downtown Niagara Falls, the KOA is your choice. There is also another popular campground south of the falls called the Riverside Park Motel and Campground (Ontario side also).

Thanks Dave. Fish Creek Ponds looks beautiful. We will reserve a site on the water for sure. We will check out the other campground that you suggested tonight.

Thanks again. Ross

Ross let me know what night(s) you are there or around Lake George... just in case we cross paths!

Cheers

Ditto. We live 40 miles S/W of Lake George.

I assume you will travel from Mystic to Vermont on Route 91. You will go by my house, only a half mile from the highway in Bernardston, MA, last town in MA before VT. Stop at the Vermont visitor's area five miles north of the border. The building and contents are worth the view, a mini museum of what's in season in Vermont.

I suggest you camp at either Ricker Pond or Stillwater in the Groton Recreational area, just south of Montpelier. The area is the largest state controlled recreational area with six or seven separate recreational parks. There are miles of old narrow gauge railbeds running throught the forest. There is even a ghost town from the 1900's lumber boom.

Call for reservations and try to get number 18 in Ricker Pond. The site is private, over an acre and on the water. Ricker Pond limits horse power to 5, so its quiet. Groton Lake, where Stillwater is, is much larger, has summer homes and the annoyance of water skiing. But is dead quiet at night and is beautiful, too.

Thanks Ronnie. I will be sure to keep this info for the furture. Our plans have changed since I posted this. Our oldest daughter is moving into another apartment the week before we head to Mystic, as well as putting our house on the market around that same time. It all boils down to this, our vacation we were going to spend up that way will be put on hold until next year. We will just make the run to Mystic and back.

Thanks to all who responed,
Ross
