Minnesota gathering

Anywhere in the country is fine. Where do you want to camp?

Postby MrBuzz » Thu Apr 10, 2008 9:08 am

UGH....The cold doesn't bother me, but if it's going to snow & rain that would up a serious damper on the festivities!
So...is everyone really going to do this??

I really wish I could come out and camp with you instead of working! It's pretty bad when I would rather camp in a snow storm than work. My truck would make it with no problem! The forecast says 11-18 inches of snow between tonight and tomorrow night. On the bright side, only 30% chance of snow on Saturday. :)

I am there. I may try to get off a couple hours early. If I can I think I may try to make it to the park Friday night just to plug in that electric blanket, instead of boondocking in Prairie. If I leave by 2, it will be around 8 by the time I get there depending on travel conditions. I should have saved that reservation charge as I don't think the park is going to be full. just squirrels and a few nuts.

The weather forecast for Whitewater is way different than the cities! Only 1-3 inches of snow expected at the park! Here's the link if you want to check the latest forcast:

Well, turns out we will not be coming today (Friday) as now Craig will be going out of town the following weekend (change of plans) so he needs to get some stuff done this weekend...grrr....crazy life! I'm not really complaining, though, as he will be bringing home our daughter, who's at school out in Utah and is moving back home for a bit. :)

Looks like we'll come out on Saturday, but depending on what gets done Friday will determine whether or not we will stay over.

Wish the weather would improve....it's been raining buckets here most of the day....temps are in the high 30's...at least it isn't snow....that's being saved for Whitewater.... :o

whitewater gathering

Postby kayaklover » Fri Apr 11, 2008 7:14 am

I'm heading out early this morning. We had a thundersnowstorm last night and getting dumped on again today, so I'll try and head out before the next round of snow.
The weather looks better south , only rain snow mix. See you there.

Hi all,
Writing from the frozen north. Sounds like we are the only ones who got hit hard. Every thing is closed here. I here things are better down south, but it is a 4 hour drive in good weather, and having to leave early Sat., it doesn't make much sense to go down.
Hope you have a good time. Keep us posted.

Whitewater white-out

Postby kayaklover » Mon Apr 14, 2008 8:23 am

Our small and snowy gathering was a great time. A canopy ,a fire, some $2.00 tarps, and plenty of liquid warmth kept us warm and laughing until the wee hours of the morning.
We went to the Lark toy museum and climbed the almost 800 steps to the fire tower for great views of downtown Elba (pop. 234) and the surrounding bluffs, I'll post some pics in my album.
Thanks to Jim,Betsey and Craig for braving the weather and coming out.
See you all at cooler in a couple weeks. :campfire: :applause:

Sorry I wussed out. But last week's multiple snow/ice storms sucked all the romance out of "cold weather camping" for me.
You are heartier souls than I!

Thanks Lori for having a good meal figured out Friday. It hit the spot after a long drive, mist and rain mostly till I hit MN then pretty tame snow. It was a bit chilly but we had a pretty nice place to stay warm and dry and enjoy a fire. All the laughing also kept the shivers away. The fire tower was fun, what a view.

All right, so I was jealous as you guys were having fun at Whitewater, and we were stuck in 7-9 inches of wet, heavy snow. I am with Mr Buzz, this winter has killed my spirit for winter camping. We do alot of it, but I can't wait to go south next winter. :(

Here is one Lori took of me on the way up the steps to the fire tower. If one climbed those steps a few times a week they would surely be fit.
