Septembers on the coast of California is usually nice too. My son's old Boy Scout troop usually had a family campout up that way just after school started in September, nice time of year up there.

September would be good (after school starts). To many gatherings the first 6 months of the year. And the weather along the central coast is still good that time of the year. Where's out Park Ranger from up in that area or is she from the Santa Barbara area?

Great idea! But then, as a SLO local, I'm not unbiased.

SLO visitor information http://www.visitslo.com
Plan a trip to Morro Bay http://morrobay.org/cm/Plan-A-Trip/Home.html

Morro Bay State Park http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=594
http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/594/files ... eFINAL.pdf
has group campgrounds that would be nice for a teardrop gathering.

Heard on the radio recently that the water line to the Morro Bay State Park golf course is very old, often breaks, and leaks a lot. SLO County operates the golf course and may not be able to afford to fix the water line. If the water line isn't fixed, or $$$ replaced, soon the golf course could turn brown this summer.

Lopez Lake, inland from Arroyo Grande, would be another good campground for a gathering. http://www.slocountyparks.com/activities/lopez.htm

For some additional fun, you can go wine tasting in San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande http://www.slowine.com or in Paso Robles http://www.pasowine.com

More campgrounds to consider for a California Central Coast TD Gathering. The weather along the coast is usually very nice late Sept. through early Nov. April and May are good too.

Plaskett Creek campground on Hwy. 1 south of Big Sur http://www.campone.com/plskt.html
is just across Hwy. 1 from Sand Dollar Beach

If you have it in September my wife will make me quit the September Round Up. Morro Bay has always been one of our favorite places.

Count us in. We are locals. If you need us to check any places or do any thing, count on us. Sept. or even Oct. sounds great.

We just got back from camping with Bill the nut at Cachuma Lake. We had a great time and my husband caught several fish.

Would you prefer to have the proposed SLO Gathering in a group camp or have each person who attends reserve their own camp spot?

Today I went to the Morro Bay State Park to look at the group campground. There are two of them side by side. They're "Developed Campgrounds" with bathrooms and showers, picnic tables, and BBQ areas. There is one water spigot for the whole area. There's no electric service. For those who like DO cooking there is a sizable concrete slab, maybe 15' square, with a fire ring. The group camps are several hundred feet beyond the more developed individual sites. The site slopes gently, with tall trees around it, and a view of the bay.

The first site is the Chorro group site with capacity for a max. of 35 people and 15 vehicles, trailers can be up to 36' . The second site is the Osos group site with a max. capacity of 25 people, 11 vehicles, and trailers up to 18' long.

As an alternative, Montana de Oro State Park, has two primitive group camping sites each with a max. capacity of 50 people, and 25 vehicles. They're more isolated located several miles south of Los Osos.

Reservations are thru Reserve America ph. (800) 444-7275 or online http://www.parks.ca.gov

Montana de Oro S.P. is my vote. You make it sound like it's so much futher away from Los Osos than Morro Bay S.P. I'll bet from Los Osos there isn't 3 miles difference. Also let's stay in the SLO area other wise lets go on up to San Simeon S.P. Also Morro Dunes Camp Ground is nice and cost about the same as Morro Bay S.P. Let's keep it in the Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo area. To bad they won't let us camp at Laguna Lake Park. That would be better than nice, well for me any ways.

All your running around Steve is good, but are you finding out what the fees are going to be. By the way, just for the heck of it. How long have you been in SLO?

Gage,

I'm not the one who proposed a SLO Gathering. I live in SLO, like the idea of having a local teardrop and DO gathering, and am doing what I can to help it come about. I came to Cal Poly SLO in '67 and stuck around. It's a beautiful part of California to call home.

Please share your preferred location for a SLO Gathering.
There seems to be a strong interest in having the gathering at Morro Bay State Park. I went by today to check it out including the group camp sites. Took some pictures of MBSP that need resizing before they can be posted.

1) Morro Bay State Park. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=594 $20-25/day. The camp ground at Morro Bay State Park was rebuilt recently. It's more RV oriented now with fewer tent campers. New bathrooms and showers are one nice new amenity. The park is just outside Morro Bay city limits close to the golf course, harbor, restaurants, shopping, etc. Two side by side group camp spots several hundred feet from the main campground...cost not known. Park brochure and map: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/594/files/MorroBaybrochureFINAL.pdf

More choices:

2) Morro Strand State Park. http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=593
$20-25/day. A campground on the beach in north Morro Bay. It's not tree shaded and could be windy. A popular unofficial dog beach is just a little north between Morro Bay and Cayucos. Map: http://www.parks.ca.gov/lat_long_map/default.asp?lvl_id=232

3) Morro Dunes. http://www.morrodunes.com/
$23.10/day for partial hookups with elec. and water. Full hookups are more. A private RV oriented campground in the City of Morro Bay on the beach near Morro rock. It looks well maintained.

4) Montana de Oro State Park. http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=592 $11-15/day. A large, uncrowded, beautiful, unspoiled, ocean front, park several miles south of Los Osos. The campground is above a sheltered beach and cove. It's a primitive campground. There are also two group campgrounds most often used by people with horses...cost $25-30/day. I haven't looked at what they have to offer. They're primitive campgrounds, so maybe pit toilets and no showers. Over a mile long ocean front bluff top walking trail and many hiking trails. What the California coast looked like prior to development. Map: http://www.parks.ca.gov/lat_long_map/default.asp?lvl_id=231

5) El Chorro Regional Park. http://www.slocountyparks.com/activities/el_chorro.htm $18-26/day. A county campground on Hwy. 1 midway between the City of SLO and Morro Bay. It's about 5 miles either way into town. There's little shade. Probably no showers...I'll check that out if there's interest in this location. There are good group picnic spots with tables below the campground. It's next to a golf course, a fenced dog park, and a botanical garden. Cuesta Jr. College is across Hwy. 1.

6) Avila Beach. http://www.portsanluis.com/ $20/night with no hookups. A Teardrop Beach Party!? You can camp on Avila Road above Port San Luis beach. It's a dog friendly beach...I think. There's no group campground. Camping spots are first come first served. The beach has several fire rings DOer's could use. Free cold water showers are available in Avila Beach. Friday fisherman's and farmer's market in Avila. Sunday art shows. The best beach weather in the area...seldom foggy. Camping areas map: http://www.portsanluis.com/services/camping.pdf Aerial photo: http://www.portsanluis.com/pics/over1.htm

We're rich with camping spots on the California Central Coast. I could have suggested more, myself. If you have a favored location you like other than the ones above please share where, why, and when.

All the camping prices were obtained from websites and should be verified. They do not include reservation fees, if any.

I started a SLO Gathering post in the South West forum with a poll to choose a camping place. Also, over on the new thread, please say WHEN you prefer the SLO Gathering to happen?

Hey Gage, I think Morro Bay is the best place. Was stationed there for 19 months in the Coast Guard. Even took a hike to the top of Morro Rock. Great Idea.
