I know it is far, But how about it?. There are some great areas to camp there most sites are near or on the ocean.

I would consider it if I can finish any time soon. My wife and I both grew up in FL, lived there for almost 20 years. She has never been to the Keys and I only went once. The time I did go, I hardly left the campground in Key Largo, didn't go on the day treks to Key West or the other places.

The first time that I went to the Keys, I was going to stay 6 days. I left 3 months later.
There is a great campground called Bahia Hondo. Rated one of the best in the U.S.

Keys sound very interesting:) I have been thinking about them and if any camping areas there. Can you all come up with some more info camping places (don't matter if its primitive). Pic's would be great.

Between the state parks and county parks and other campgrounds in the keys. I always have a good time, matter of fact I will be at Fiesta Key KOA for a family thing in December. Long Key and Bahia Honda State Parks are really nice campgrounds, but you have to book early it fills fast.
Koa's in Sugarloaf and Fiesta Key are really clean and well maintained. I mean I could write a book about how great the camping in the keys really is.

When and where is all that is needed

Sounds great to me. Last time we where in the Keys we drove all night, droped off a big truck and headed back to Illinois all in one day. I was asleep half the time so I didnt get to see much. Bye

I'm sure come January I won't even need the excuse of a gathering to be tempted!

It can be, but have you priced a hotel room down there, camping is cheap trust me.
But look where you are, the keys during the winter or spring. While the north is hibernating and wishing to go camping, We can be sitting by the ocean on the beach like in those Corona beer comercials just enjoying the weather

Chartered a sailboat once, from Key West to Marathon. We anchored off Bahia Hondo for a couple of days. I found a coconut on the beach: took it back to the boat, busted it open with an axe, and ate it. Such a non-Toronto thing to do.

I love it down there. It's the Caribbean, but with Piggly-Wiggly and Budweiser. Woody, anytime before Spring Break is fine by me. I've been looking for an excuse to get South while it's cold up North.

As Chip said we do have a gathering Jacksonville in Feb. Perfect excuse to come south. I still want to explore a "gathering" in the keys.

That was one of the day trips my parents took. They said that they were attacked by mosquitoes there.

I would like to add; the kayak and canoe folks can probably bring their boats. In our camprgound the water was calm and we took out an inflatable kayak. I don't know how comfortable I would be putting a stripper into the saltwater though. Then again I haven't been there in a long time. Put it this way, while we were camping, some of the women were watching Diana and Charles getting married.
