hey Gabe, before you invite the regular SCT crew over, might wanna checkout some of the LCG and other gathering threads in the South Central section...we tend to have a real good time when gathered in any one(or several) place...................

Barn raising

Postby Alfred » Fri Nov 20, 2009 5:52 pm

I think this is a great idea. I tried to get something similar off the ground here in Western NC, "teardrop raising/build party" sort of thing, but couldn't quite make it happen. I hope it works out for you!

AL in Asheville

Now that we have Gabe worried, the only REAL warning I would give the host/hostess of a TD&TTT "barn raising" is to make sure you know what you want to get done during that weekend -- or, on that Saturday, which is when most of the work will get done. People will need to go home on Sunday.

Make sure there is a "mission" to accomplish. If we don't know what needs to get done, then not much will get done.

Also, make sure you have the "plan" and the supplies on hand. If the "mission" will require certain tools, we probably have them between us, but we have to know to bring them.

Plan the work, work the plan.

Hey I got a idea. You all can help me. I hope to have one of my Teepes done by early spring. I will come to a gathering with polish. The camper is 15' long 7' high and 7' wide. There will be lots of space for all to rub and rub and rub. But upkeep is a big thing with a silver side so if I do the 1962 I may paint it. But if it is the 1961 I will have to polish it. The thing is from what I can find out is that in 61 all were silver sides in 62 they painted some and some were silver sides. Will give a up date later

I am game for this.

However, I do have to wonder how parishioners will feel when they arrive at church on Sunday morning to find a bunch of hung-over campers.

Not that wild!!!

Postby SATEAR » Sat Nov 21, 2009 10:08 pm

Now I know you guys are not that wild, are you?

In any case we also have a neighborhood association area 2 blocks up from where we live that we can use for their parking area.

I have to let you know that I live in a older, quiet neighborhood and the police have been called on me once when I got up early in the morning and fired up my lawnmower ;). Working and drinking and eating all day Saturday would'nt be a problem though. We can keep the grill going with lots of fajitas.

I also have my "To Do" list prepared and have used it since I started my rebuild. I have most things on hand but am lacking aluminum sheets since I have not found a good source here in San Antonio. Cheapest I've found is $48/Sheet. Any cheaper in Dallas? (Maybe you all could bring down a couple of sheets for me if they are cheaper). I am waiting to cut out my hatch ribs until someone more experienced can perform the job. (I definitely don't want to mess up this part after working so hard on everything else) :)

We are not THAT wild. As far as you know. ;)

I was HOA President for three years, so my neighbors leave me alone.

I have a really good jig saw for cutting those hatch ribs. That, plus an electric planer and belt sander do a good job. You can do it with the right tools.

Charles has started build #5 but I'm affraid if I invited you all to Pollok for a "barn" raising it would be finished before you arrived.
You know how Charles is. :?

Oh, BTW ................Charles IS retiring Dec 31st so I guess he will have plenty of time to work on his new build.
Don't know if I'm ready for this or not.

I was able to do a few more things on my TD this week with a slow work week in my job!

There will be plenty left to do when you all come down

Dry Fit Hatch-this is the old hatch aluminum that I will be re-using after a good cleaning and buffing ;)

A little more work this weekend!

Postby SATEAR » Sun Nov 29, 2009 10:06 pm

Hey Everyone,

My son and I did a little more work this weekend. I put on my 1/8" Birch Plywood and am bending it into the roof. I don't want to bend it all the way so I am slowwwwwly squeezing her down with the lashings.

Can anyone tell me on which spar I attach the roof???? Is it the hatch spar or do I need to leave a little space to attach my hurricane hinge?????

The original TD I am rebuilding had a roof but it was dry rotted and fell apart on the demo before I could see where it was attached.

(I know, I know, I lurk all the time) but if any of these happen, I'd love to come help. The biggest hold up for me right now gettings tarted is not knowing what the heck I'm doing. I've got two construction-savvy people who keep promising to help and keep not being available, and I'm getting frustrated.

Current plan is something weekender-ish (6x8 with floor space, like the Stewarts' weekender,) as simple as possible.

I know how to sand things and paint, lay tile and lineoleum and that's sort of where my knowledge ends.

I'd LOVE to do this, if I'm off the weekend in question. In fact, I'd love to work with an experienced builder al the way throgh a second or third build, to learn from them. No tear to camp in, though. Bad juju.
