I called the TPWD in Austin for a reservation at 512-389-8900. It's an automated system but it will eventually let you talk to a person. They wre pretty busy when I called but it gives you the option to leave a call back number. It seems to work , they called me back about a hour later. Beats being on hold listening to bad music.

I just made my reservation so I'm in.

Steve H said: I had intended to organize this gathering, but I certainly won't turn down help. Laughing Thanks for offering.

Carry on, my friend. Just let me know if/when/what kind of help you need, I'm happy to help.

So much for my recon trip. When I woke up this afternoon it was raining, watched some TV and fell back asleep, when I woke up it was still raining. It stopped so I got ready to go out. Drove down to the tag office to renew the registration on one of the cars, it started raining again.

Maybe next week.

I've been putting off reserving til I talked to my sis who lives 15-20 minutes from Inks to see if they wanted to tent camp with us. They're in (as well as their daughter & family). I'll be reserving 3 sites for us. What is the best way, phone, ReserveAmerica? Any differences? Not calling today because of the holiday, so I will either call tomorrow or go online, at y'alls best suggestion.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Reserve America charges $3 to make reservations online. Those fees are waved if you call Texas Parks reservation number - for me it's worth the extra $3 to do it online and save the frustration of waiting for a call-back, or having to give my credit card number over the phone (which seems to love cutting out when I'm giving the number).

Okay, so I booked 3 sites thru ReserveAmerica.

Here's my question to any who might know--The charge was 36 per site (plus the 3 fee) for those dates, but it said it didn't include the entrance fee. Is that going to be an additional $9 per day (5 for day and 4 for night) per person, or do they waive that if you are camping? Or am I wallowing in my normal state of confusion (which is surprisingly, a substate within the state of Texas)?

As if this stuff wasn't confusing enough.

You'll still need to pay the overnight fees, unless you have a yearly parks pass and those fees are waved for you, and everyone that arrives in the vehicle you are in.

It gets even more confusing now - sometimes entrance fees are more expensive than overnight fees. If you have people coming to stay with you, they may be charged less if they are staying overnight with you (or say that they are) than if they are just in for the day.

You will only pay *ONE* of the fees per person though - you'll pay an entrance, or an overnight, but not both.

Hope this makes sense. :?

Here is something else to consider - if you do a lot of camping in state parks, it's worth it to get the yearly pass. Not only will it wave entrance/overnight fees, but I got 4 coupons for free camping with mine. Buy one nights camping, the second is free. I think the pass is $60 per year.

So if you don't have a pass, and 4 people stay at a park that's $20 camping per night, plus $4 overnight fees, and you stay for 2 nights, that's going to run you:

Camping: $40
Overnight: $32
Total: $72

Now if you have a yearly pass:

Camping: $20 (one night free coupon)
Overnight: $0
Total: $20

You've almost paid for the card in one weekend! If you don't camp much in Texas State Parks, then it's probably not worth it.

Thanks, Steve. Now I know to expect more charges. I should probably buy the yearly permit to help supplement the Texas parks, if for no other reason.

Okay, bad news for you. I'm in!

Just reserved a spot, with much difficulty and cussing.

I have no idea if I will be able to make it that weekend, but I commited, anyway. If not, spill some beer on my deck so it will be just like I was there.
