Arkansas Camp-in at Petit Jean State Park July 28th and 29th

Postby ARKPAT » Tue Apr 10, 2007 10:38 pm

Here is the information I have from the Park below:

Thank you for your interest in Petit Jean State Park. All of our campsites have water, electricity, picnic table and grill. We will have plenty of availability during June July and August other than major holidays and the week of June 11-16. We have the most openings in August.

Here is some information about making reservations for campsites.

We cannot split a Friday and Saturday either on arrival or departure. We require the first night’s fee to be paid at the time you make your reservation either by debit or credit card. That fee is non-refundable if you have to cancel. All sites must be reserved in the name and address of the person who will be occupying the site. If someone calls and makes a reservation for a campsite and has to cancel, that fee and reservation cannot be transferred to another individual in the group.

I hope this helps with your plans. If you have any additional questions please feel free to give us a call or visit our website at www.petitjeanstatepark.com

I would like to request Common Area for us to be. I know this is close to School begins and hotter part of the year but a great place to have a camp-in with access of 40 or more trailers. Please go to the website to see the amenities and requirements.

Pat, those sound like good dates to me...far enough away from school start and far enough from Minden to give folks that wanna do both a little break in between...we have been needing an Arkansas campout and this sounds like the deal...I used to goto PetitJean regularly but that was in the early 70's and it was a real pretty park back then and usually much cooler than down in the flatlands........

p.s. any idea if we want to be in area A, B, C or D........MJ

Madjack I forgot I'm going down to Conway Sunday for a meeting I will swing by on the way down. That would save two trips in three days.
Duh
Save that gas for the Camp-in.
I'm glad I'm almost thinking.
I will get some idea about which area we would like to request.

Hey Pat,

Thanks for gathering the info. Even though it will be August, if it is in the mountains, the temperature will be pleasant. I went camping in Northern Arkansas in June one year. The days were around 75 to 80 degrees and the nights were in the 40's to 50's.

I'll check out the site! Could be a great way to cap the summer off! :)

Julie...since they allow boats with upto a 10hp motor, I would assume kayaks would be just fine....

SpTd...according to the website, they have a public pool...I used to to PetitJean quite a bit...35years ago...and there were some (a) nice creeks below the waterfall you could splash around in...

Like I said, it has been well over 30 years since I last visited but there were several sites to take in around the area...the various overlooks are nice and WinRock Farms was very impressive, as was the adjoining car museum....

Pix of Petit Jean SP

Postby Nobody » Sat Apr 14, 2007 8:30 pm

Lenora & I drove up to Petit Jean today to give the place a look-see ;) . We used to go pretty often but it's been a lotta years & things have really changed, mostly for the better. They've got some new elevated walkways to view the falls better, & the hiking/viewing trails are nicely marked & well turned out if you like that kinda thing. They have a large public pool which will probably be welcome in July 8) . The campgrounds have been upgraded since last time we were there, & it appears every site has elect & water, lotsa shade, & there is a a nice bath house in each of the 4 loops. I PM'd Pat with the latest & if he goes by there tomorrow, we should be able to start making reservations ASAP. It is really a beautiful place & it appears the hard freeze of a few days ago didn't hurt the vegetation there much if at all  . I took several pix & have set up an album at my Yahoo account. Think I've got it fixed so you can go to the following link, then click on 'slideshow' & view the pix. If it takes you to the account home page, you may have to click on Petit Jean SP, then click slideshow :? . Still ain't sure I've got this 'puter stuff down but if it don't work, lemme know & I'll try something else :worship: Here's the link - http://tinyurl.com/3xhey9

Those are good pictures. Thanks for sharing them. It looks like a nice place to camp. We have been there a couple of times for an old car swap meet but didn't see much else.

Great job Nobody!
I did the same thing Sunday but used a 35mm camera. Looks like areas "B" and "C" are the likely candidates. With Area "B" a short distance from everything (store, picnic area, "Boathouse" ) and closer sites. Also less dense tree area. 8)
The only thing is a common pivilion of gathering area.
Maybe a central campsite to gather at????
Let do it! ? :D

Dave and others.
Just follow the website of the first post and request Area"B" and area "C" will be the backup overflow.
8)
Area "B" sites are:36 thru 60
Area "C" sites try to keep in the 60' and 90's for the camp site to be close to Area "B"
Now all we need is a Magic Map to appear.
Look like the first Annual Petit Jean State Park Camp-in ! ! !
 :D
Nobody has reserved his sites and a common area I will do the same this week also.
And Sodapop I think you can leave your kiddy pool at home they have two pools looking at the map. You can ask about the pools when you make reservations for you site.

:applause:
Pat

P.S. I will try to get more information just P.M. me about what you do not understand or questions.

You might check when making reservations about the two pools. The price of admission to the pool are $3 a day by their fee schedule for 2007. Boat rentals at the "Boathouse" are :
Petal Boats are $3/ 1/2 hour and $5/hour
Fishing Boats are $7 1/2 day and $10 day
Fishing Boats with Motor is $18 1/2 day and $25 a day
Water bikes $4 1/2 hour and $6 an hour
Car Musem $7 or $3.50 for 65+ Under 6 free ( proof rerquired I would think for you thinking types)

Cabins and Lodge rates are there on their website.
And Oh yes the ones of you that are pulling your trailer by airplane there is a day landing strip very close to the area. ;)

Rent a camp
Rent a Tepee is also avaiable.

Looks like Pat has it pretty well lined up. I reserved sites 58 & 59, will probably camp in #59 & we can use 58 as a common area since it has a laaaarge tent pad that makes a nice level spot for setting up tables, E-Z Ups, etc. I didn't see a 'bad' site in the entire park, tho some aren't as level as others but all are nice & none are steeply sloped. Tables, fire rings/grates, & lantern poles are standard at pretty well all sites.

I talked to a park employee yesterday, & right now most all sites in Loops B & C are available for Jul 27 & 28 (Fri & Sat nite). She said they will start to fill up probably pretty soon so it would be a good idea to call in reservations ASAP. You can make reservations online but CANNOT reserve a specific site that way, best way is to call the park & reserve a specific site using credit or debit card. The website at this link - http://tinyurl.com/2vo6cy - has a good map of the campground loops, just click on "Detailed Campground Map" & it'll bring up a PDF in Adobe Acrobat, that shows site #'s & relative location. Might be a good idea to have the map handy when calling in for your reservation. Check-in/out time is 3PM so unless you plan to arrive a lot earlier, that should be OK for Friday nite 'til Sunday PM. All sites, except the sites in Loop A, & # 47 & 48 in Loop B, are Class B sites w/elect(30amp) & water; rates are $17 per day. Loop A is all Class AAA, AA, or A sites, 50amp service w/water & sewer connections & run $24-27 (more for premium sites). The two I listed in Loop B (47 & 48 ) appear to have 30/50amp & perhaps sewer so they're probably Class A @ $24. The park phone # to call for reservations is 501 727-5441.

Pat says he's gonna drive SH 10 or 22 from Ft Smith area to SH 155/154 near Russelville & probably come up the west end of the mountain. That way may not be quite as steep/winding as SH 154 up the east end, but it's a little longer climb (3mi vs 1mi) & unless you're familiar with Arkansas back roads/byways it might be a good idea to approach Morrilton on I-40 either from east or west. Take Exit 108 & follow SH 9 south approx 7mi to junction with SH 154 at Oppelo, then follow 154 west to the mountain/park, about 11mi or so. For those traveling I-40 & want to try the less steep climb at west end, take Exit 81 at Russelville, then south on SH 7 approx 12mi to jct SH 154 at Centerville, then it's a straight shot east approx 15mi to the park. If your trailer is relatively heavy & your tow vehicle has minimum power, that might be the way to go. I pull my TD with a 4cyl Nissan P/U & I've pulled it up the 13-16% grades of the Talimena Drive in Western Arkansas/Eastern Oklahoma. It's slow to be sure (2nd/3rd gear sometime) ;) but did pretty well, & the east end of Petit Jean isn't any steeper if that bad  .

Again, the phone # for making reservations is 501 727-5441

See y'all at "Petty Jean" in July
