I think the best place is in the Jemez Mountains in North Central New Mexico. Its a nice drive and close enough to Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

There are lots of nice places to relax in New Mexico. It all depends on what kind of scenery you want to look at and how far away from civilization you want to get. Living in Las Cruces, in the southern part of the state, I'm kind of partial to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. A lot of that has to do with how close they are. I like to be up in the mountains in the tall pines to relax. The northern part of the state on into Colorado is also very nice, and generally cooler than down where I live. The Jemez mountains are also very nice and there is a lot of history around Santa Fe. Of course, we have some history in the southern part of the state as well. The White Sands National Monument is over close to Alamogordo and in the southeastern part of the state you have Carlsbad Caverns. If you are ever going to come see either of those two, come in the cooler part of the year, not in the middle of the summer. White Sands is best enjoyed in the early morning or late evening, avoid the middle part of the day. On the western side of the state, you have the Gila Wilderness. Lots of nice places to relax!

Depends on what you want. Cloudcroft is quiet and secluded, Ruidoso is nice but touristee(Mexico owns it), and Santa Fe is nice as well.
Are you looking for seculsion, fishing, camping, shopping..............?

I went to college in Las Cruces so I spent a lot of time in the southern part of the state. I would recommend White Sands National Monument, Aguirre Springs (on the east side of the Organ Mtns.) City of Rocks State Park and Rock Hound State Park (both are near Deming). These areas are all very scenic with opportunities for hiking, biking, stargazing, photography, etc. You also can't go wrong with the Carlsbad area and the Guadalupe Mtns. (actually in Texas). Fall, winter or spring would be the best times of the year to go. Enjoy the Land of Enchantment!

I'd recommend Coyote Creek State Park near Guadalupita. Clean mountain air with just a hint of burning pinion wood in the air. The night sounds of coyotes echoing in the distance. A skillet of fresh caught trout cooking over the campfire. For relaxin it just doesn't get much better than that.

The area incorporating the Guadalupe Sector of Lincoln National Forest west of Carlsbad near the community of Queen is a hidden jewell. Free camping, lots of back roads to explore, peace and quiet and at 6-7,000 feet fairly cool even in the summer. This is a very isolated area and no gas/food/ice is available except in Carlsbad (40mi). I have been Jeeping and camping here for years and have always had a great time.

I agree with everything all have said before. However, how could y'all forget New Mexico's most famous resident; Billy the Kid. If you're into Cowboy history, Southern New Mexico is just the ticket.

Yes
Las Cruces , NM is 45 miles from El Paso. Located close to Las Cruces is Old Mesilla, a village where the Kid hung out and also where Pat Garrett lived and worked.

I'm partial to the mountains so northern New Mexico does it for me. I've lived and worked around Farmington for a while, very pretty once you get off the "beaten path".
Farmington area, "break time at Navajo Lake"
next two are from the southern CO area, but the terrain is somewhat similar.
Old pictures, but I think the mountains are still the same.
